checking out an 8 3/4 axle with a limited-slip and after pulling the axles i couldn't re-install the drivers side all the way. after closer inspection i found the inner set of clutch plates moved to where they are not aligned with the outer set. i tried to move them with no luck. any ideas on getting them back in alignment? thanks, dave
Loosen the bolts on the sure grip slightly to relieve the pressure on the side gears and put an axle in there to line them up. Leave the axle in and tighten the bolts back up.
If you ever get into rebuilding these a lot it's handy to have axle shaft ends cut off from bad axles as an alignment tool.

I had a cone style do that to me after a rebuild.Install the other axle and hold it still,or put on ground with the tire.Slide in the other axle until it stops then turn with a large pry bar on the wheel studs and push while turning.
If you have not removed the chunk, then try this method.
EDIT: Also look down the tube and make sure the thrust buttons are still in place. There is one on each side in the suregrip, these allow for axle end play adjustment.

Loosening the bolts won't help unless you take the carrier out of the case, the side bearings will hold the two halves together... If you decide to take it apart measure the backlash first mark the adjusters & the caps... Count the turns .. The thing is if the clutches are good you'll have a hard time getting enough torque on the axles with the unit not solidly mounted in the car... As mentioned, one tire on the ground then either a bar or I've used the other wheel to get leverage to turn the axle forcing the clutches to slip.. While turning push inward.... It make take turning forward and rearward but it will go...
I agree , put it back in the car .

Forgot to mention that. Try the aforementioned pry bar and turning method before removing the pig, they should go.
