I have a '65 727 for my Coronet that needs a new valve body.It is a column shifted, cable operated trans. Are there other valve bodies that will interchange with this like a '64 or earlier push button,or is this a one year only VB? Freshening up the trans and a crack was found in a passage.Any clues appreciated!
Thanks,RT

A PB VB will work IN the trans but NOT with the shifter. Where is the crack? post-a-pic?

If you want to stick with this combo(I know a bunch of guys that have put a PB dash in a 65) .... put a WANTED ad in here. I would think that there would be more "65" VB's than regular PB ones ... because the PB ones are more popular.

Doc,I found a '64 PB valve body for sale here in the ads.If the castings are the same, could the shifter parts be swapped from my column shift body to the PB body?I'm assuming if the casting numbers match it would be possible, unless they are machined differently. I don't have my valve body with me now,it is at a friends shop, sorry no photo!I don"t want to change to a PB setup.Should have put that clutch pedal in it and moved forward I guess!
Thanks.Ron

Ron ....I do NOT think it is the same. But I am sure that John Kunkel would know. But in any case ... I think you would be better-off just waiting for the right one. Put a WANTED ad in now !

I used to have a BUNCH of these ... but they are long gone. All I have are PB VBs now.

Yes, Mr. Kunkel will tell us the straight of it, but I believe if you keep your present detent and shift cable, you may be able to interchange PB and 65 valve bodies.

A PB VB won't work with a console or column shifter; the PB VB's don't have a Park position for the manual valve in the main VB casting.

Simply changing the roostercomb and manual valve won't work either, there has to be a hole in the casting for the added position.

Thanks for all the replies.I won't have my VB casting number until tomorrow.RO51 Hemi, thanks I did find the e-bay link to T-flite Patty,s dong a search. They show a correct VB in their list, have you bought anything from them?John Kunkel, thanks for clarification of the VB difference,PB to column/console.If I understand correctly the added detent keeps the column/console lever locked in the park position, where the PB was locked by the separate park lever. Is it possible for a PB valve body with the same casting number to have the necessary hole but unused?Or if no hole is present is it possible to modify it to work?
Thanks again,Ron

A 65 cable trans is a cable trans period. The 65 column shift uses cables just like the PB does. Any 62 to 65 cable valve body will work with the 65 column cable shifter.

In '64 the casting number would be the same, the machining is what made them different. Boring the needed hole would be a precision machining operation, not a good idea to try at home.

I found a valve body with the same casting number as mine.It was listed(for sale) as a PB body, but it was a core trans and the shifter PB or console was really unknown. I am going to get it and compare the two.My valve body is cracked right next to the casting number, hairline with a small hole too! This would be an internal leak for sure.It may be repairable as it is on the top of the body away from the machined surface.I will post a photo of the crack and follow up with the final resolution,be it replacement or repair.

Doc,No core trans for me,just the valve body. The seller of the VB had the core trans and installed a manual VB in it,so the stock VB is a leftover.

not to hi-jack the post, but i just picked up a cable operated trans,is this a one year only trans?,it has 2 cables, and instead of a slip yoke,it has a round plate with 4 bolts that the driveshaft would attach to.is this a motor home trans or something older than i am use to seeing?

If it's aluminum, 2 cable with a flange it should be 62-64. I have a BB one set aside from when I was doing 57-58 Mopars.
