Opinions please!
I’m getting close to putting my engine back together for the ‘Bird. This is a 440 with a 4.15 stroker crank netting about 497 cubic inches, 10:1 compression and ported 906 heads. The cam is a custom ground hydraulic flat tappet from Hughes.
Here are my two paths I’m considering:
first is the lower cost option of the stamped MP “six pack” rocker arms and adjustable pushrods.
The second option would be the Hughes 1.5: roller rockers. The rollers would be considerably more of an investment (about $400 more) and I have no doubt that these would be the “better” option, but would they be worth the additional investment.
This is going to be a strong regularly driven street car with only a very occasional (if ever) pass down the strip. I’d like to save a few bucks if I can, but don’t want to cheap out on something that would be of significant benefit to my engine.
Thoughts?

$400 more for the rollers ? I just bought a set of smith bros adjustables and the KIT of stamped steel rockers from Mancini , $275 for the pushrods , $200 for the stamped steel kit and they didn't appear to be any better than the old std dutys I have and the side clearance between them ranged from .014 to .050 ...

If you need an adjustable valvetrain buy REAL adjustable rockers , you'll be happier in the long run

John, thanks for the response.
The $400 is the difference beween the two options. The purchase price of the MP stamped set, adj. pushrods and rocker shafts is about $400. the adjustable roller kit with shafts, hold downs and pushrods is about $800. I'm just trying to decide if it's worth spending an extra $400 to get the roller rockers. I know they would be a better choice if money were no object, but I'm just not sure if It's justified for my application/build

Will need to know the specs on the cam and valve springs before anyone can make a recommendation.

Why would you need adjustable pushrods? I ran a lunati voodoo 60303 cam with stock rockers and stock pushrods.

Rule of thumb is HD stamped rockers are good for .5" lift. Perhaps a bit more on a moderate RPM stroker with moderate springs. It depends on the cam/spring combo.

x3 ..... save your money and actually do yourself and the VALVE SPRINGS a favor by using the stamped-steel ones.....

The stamped steel ones to a better job "oiling"(cooling) the VS's ...

thanks for the inputs,
I may have my answer based on some of your responses.
Cam specs are around (going from memory here as i am away from my buildsheet) .524/.558 lift and duration is 230 +/- @.050
I just looked up the valvesprings and they are 335# of pressure @ .550 lift
does that add any clarification?

I am using adjustable pushrods since the block has been decked and the heads milled, the factory length has now changed slightly and I just want to be sure the lifters have the right preload, and are all even.

That cam/spring combo is really pushing it for stamped rockers. I'd go with stouter rockers. I'm partial to steel (Comp pro magnum or Crane ductile iron if available) but good aluminum would work also.

I would get a set of reliable adjustable iron units There was a nice looking set in the race parts for sale section.

, rollers are over kill , especially the price , The comp pro magauns are 680 , you'll just need to buy pushrods .

Find a set of ductile units .

I would run stock rockers with that cam. Stock pushrods too if the heads/block haven't been milled that much. Like I said, I ran stock pushrods and rockers with a lunati voodoo 60303 cam which is a little smaller than the one you have. May make a difference that my rockers were off a 76 440, which some guy says the later 440's got the same HD rockers that mp sells now.

However I would sooner put that money towards a set of ductile rockers and new non-adjustable pushrods than spend it on adjustable pushrods for stock rockers. If you can reuse all your stock stuff, that's one thing, but I wouldn't invest into it.
