afaik post-81 7 1/4s have c-clips, previous they are bolts
as for the bearings, I'm not trying to spend a whole lot of money to keep this car on the road, it's a rusty DD and I just need something to get around town. I figured I'll flush the case out as best I can with solvent before re greasing everything and call it a day, if it blows up again there's always an 8 1/4 junkyard units lying around on the cheap
Why risk it blowing out again, if you can replace it with another rear on the cheap i'd do that instead, i'm sure theres alot more damage then just the spider gears, when the spiders/clusters start having issues & its chunking parts or clunking around it can/will in most cases fracture the ring/pinion, even damage the bearings, so why risk it, IMO just replacing the spiders it'll be a ticking time bomb anyways.

Agreed, patching up a 7 1/4 is a grenade with the pin pulled, but sometimes that is what we need to do at the time. If someone is working on the ground with limited finances and tools fixing the old one may be a better road for now. "Just toss in an 8 1/4" sounds easy and types fast, but now you are into rusty brake lines, rusty U-bolts, probably locating new shock mount plates and a driveshaft, etc., not to mention the added bulk of muscleing the new axle in and out. Personally, I'd pull the cover and see if the carrier is good and if the crosspin will come out before I ordered parts - but that's just me. Luckily I have a spare car to drive, and a well stocked garage to work out of - I haven't always been this lucky.

agreed, patching the 7 1/4 might only get me another year or so, but I'm working with limited tools/space in the parking lot in front of my building. and I recently found out my landlord doesn't approve of car work when he threatened to tow the charger after I took the front suspension out for blasting/coating and new bushings.
I'll be able to do things more conscientiously in the future, but I already have a 'project car' that I'm 'doing right', and I really just need to get this one back on the road.
also, found a decent deal on an internals kit (4 gears, washers, cross pin, lock+pinion screw bolts) at national drivetrain for $85.
As I said in my post I understand your situation. The reason why I mentioned the inspection before buying parts - the diff pinion gears often gall and grab the cross pin and spin it in the housing, which breaks off the retaining bolt. Sometimes you can't get the cross pin out, the broken bolt out, or the case gets wallowed out or cracked, which at that point you also need a case too.
