Can you define "low dollar" and is there a minimum weight requirement?

Just make the car light enough and you could probably
do it with a stock 318

low weigh a-body... 10:1 440, 509 hydro or 557 solid cam, decent heads, 1 7/8 headers, 3800 stall, good trans w/ manual valve body and 4.10's That should get you in the 10's. Not sure it's all that cheap. I guess one could build a mid-11 second motor and hit it w/ a 150 shot too.

low dollar is relative. i've done it as cheaply as humanly possible, but it ain't cheap. i've used good parts, and have done all the work myself. i haven't added up my receipts because i don't want to, but count on spending ~7 large on the engine (at least), 2 grand on the tranny, 2 grand on the rearend, a couple grand on wheels, tires, cage, outfitting the car (doing the work yourself, of course), plus the purchase price of the car. my combo is a 496 "a" body. 10.33:1, ported (by me) edelbrock closed chamber heads, 509 cam, 1.6 rockers, mighty demon carb, m1 intake, hooker super comp 2" primary fenderwells, dual 3.5 exhaust, moser 60, 3.73 with spool, 35 spline, 30" tall m/t et streets, 727 with lots of billet from crt, tci ultimate street fighter convertor 4400 stall (there's close to a grand right there- don't skimp on your convertor!), 3.5 dom steel drive shaft, forged solid 1350 u joints, 10 point cage, street legal with working horn, lights, wipers, and it runs easy tens all day long. i drive it to the track (50 miles each way).

Well damn - its not that difficult.

In high school I had a dart

To save money put in a roll bar that was sitting at a local shop forever and got a good deal on it. It was for a 69 camaro and the measurements all worked out.

Car was all steel with plexiglass windows (couldnt afford lexan)

440 with 11.5:1 TRW pistons, steel 452 heads with home port job (I probably hurt them more than anything)torker intake, stock ignition, 850 holley DP

727 with shift kit, and some worn out used converter someone gave me

Cheap fiberglass seat, all interior stripped, alum dash, pro stick shifter

8.75 rear for A body with stock axles redrilled by Moser. Swap meet wheels, no spool in rear, 5 gallon fuel cell and batteries in trunk.

Stock leaf springs with pinion snumbber

Car weighed 2850 without me. So at the time 3000....car was very capable of high 10s in good air. Not knowing anything, and being a broke ass high school kid I was happy as hell.

It even looked pretty good. Just was NOTHING fancy or NOTHING that wasnt needed. Everything was boughten at swap meets, traded with friends or was given old worn out parts. Hell the trans just had a shift kit in it.

1.50 sixty foots, with posi and stock rear leafs, we added some extra leafs to beef it up. No idea if that helped or hurt....LOL

Sold that car rolling for 1500 bucks.

A guy I used to race against had what I beleive to be the cheapest 10.00 bracket car in existance. A well used roadster drag car, and a bone stock Buick 430 with nothing more than a cam in it. All the guy had in it other than stock may have been a converter and slicks?
Had I the need, I would hunt for a used roadster, a running boneyard 400, cast iron intake, thermoquad and all. A spare 340 converter, (in the shed) stock heads with valves back cut, a mild cam, reworked carb, some cheap headers, and have a ball. A two step and line lock, and you are in business!

Im with you. Maybe you can do it for cheaper but it wont last long and might not be real safe.

Whoa that is impressive. Just out of interest what was that combo turning rpm across the line.

Ford and Chev racers must of thought you where running a shot

There is a guy in my area that has built 4-5 super low-buck "cars" that have run well into the 10's. They are welded up from scratch and end up looking like an altered, or a front-engine dragster with the rear end behind the driver. Usually 302 Ford power. Weight is probably less than 1500.

I consider my 440 low budget for a 10 sec car. 440 stock crank and block, eddy rpm heads (highest dollar part) holley street dominator intake, (swap meet piece) 1000hp carb, 613 flat tappet cam. Best of 10.59 in a 70 bee. In a lighter a body I could see 10.0s or close. Fun for not a ton of money.

Bought a old 440 block for $20. bucks, Called Brandon at 440 Source and ordered up a 505 pump gas stroker kit, Jegs for a set of Eddy RPM's and a victor intake. Bought a $100. cam and lifters off E-bay . Put it all together and it runs 10.30 at 130+ with 1.40 60ft. Maybe if I advance the cam it"ll run 10. O"S

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

go in the race parts section of moparts, and buy the x block that is for sale super cheap with pistons,,and do a set of ported eddy heads that will easily get u in the 10's,with a cam in the high 500's lift or low 600's

DRO has started a series about a 10-second car for less than 10K.

Honestly, I'm sure you could find a decent roller for 5K and a motor/trans for less than 4K.

Been looking at roller Rear Engine Dragsters (RED) on racing junk.
There were a few at 3K.
Add BB or SB and a trans.
Add wiring, 3rd member as needed (depends on the deal you get)
Safety equipment

Only problem is that the truck and trailer have to be factored in, but 10s should be real easy with a basic motor and trans.

I did it 2002 with:

A $3000, rolling Dart Sport. It had a cage, some fiberglass, all lexan, tin dash, ss springs, slicks/Welds, 4.89/spool, Moser axles, blah, blah...

I added a used, well-built 12:1 383 short block that was had for $400

I spent $700 on a set of locally ported 452 heads, scrounged a free Ultra Dyne .613/277 cam.

Used Pro Parts headers were $250.

A rebuilt 727 with a man vb, and a new $700 converter.

And spent as little as possible, elsewhere: Cheap generic lifters, cobbled together springs from a super stock guy's "stuff", swap meet iron rockers, intake and carb, etc...I had MAYBE another $2000 in odds and ends; new front tires, fuel pump, and trips to the auto parts store...

Bottom line is that $7500-ish got mid 10's @ 124. That's low dollar, to ME.

But the meaning of low, low dollar is open to opinion...

top two pics are the dart, bottom pic is my brother AFXCoronet here, way back when he was in high school with his 65

Really wish I had the money to buy that dart back - but he wants a bunch more for it and it hasnt been touched since I sold it....figures.

Thats what I'm talk'in about!

low dollar 10 second cars

That's a bit of a oxymoron isn't it?

Just make the car light enough and you could probably
do it with a stock 318

Bingo! I think a junker, gutted, subcompact anything, with a mild, hyd cammed 440 should do it. Narrow rear would have to scored used. I remember alot of v-8 vegas and colts with mild big blocks running mid-high 10s. The thread about the 440 civic reminded me about that way to cheap speed!

Did I miss the part about no spray? Also didn't see anything about how long it has to live.

Not a mopar but years ago I seem to remember a ponitac outa FL running low 12s on motor and something crazy like 9.40s on spray. I've also been running the tree at a track rental when a mid 11sec foxbody sprayed his way to running 9.80, I think it would of went alittle faster if he hadn't damn near ripped the rear bumper off and flattened the headers.

So a decent 13sec car with enough tire to hook a 10sec pass and spray the piss outa it for as long as you can keep pistons in it.

I do love the dragster idea and I am shocked how cheap they are now, back when I was looking a few years ago 7k was cheap for a roller.

I know quite a few budget 440 out there running mid low 10s with defnitely nothing exotic. I personally feel the chrysler big block is the best bang for the buck of all the big three. Ill even go as far to say you could get cheaper horsepower per dollar then the chevy small block and it would be much more reliable and sturdy.

Took till the second page for someone to say nitrous...???

These stock big blocks can take a lot ov nitrous. I see no need for a stroker, or half the other fancy [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] in here to build a low low budget 10 second car. Its possible, and i've seen a few good ones locally. The street racing scene bred some pretty gnarly stuff, and when it broke up and a few ov these hit the track there was some JUNK running into the 10's. Almost all ran NOS.

Does it have to be Mopar? that certainly makes it easier. Even without saying the SBC word, LOTS ov ways to do this. The Fox-body 5.0L on juice is pretty common, there has to be a few out there in the 10's...

Anyone remember that Hotrod article many years ago with the 12-second $2000 Dart? That was arguably built on less than 2 grand, and ran into the 12's. Now, if you added a pile ov NOS...

Or how about that guy that was in the Fastest Street Car in America top-10 with a low buck LX Mustang. He was using junkyard Caddy 500's and dumping large amounts ov nitrous into them. $500 car, $100 engine, and build from there... you've already saved a TON...

Personally, if i wanted to build an all-out fast as possible on as little money as possible car, i'd find a first-gen RX-7 and either a boneyard 400/440 or Caddy 500 and spray it.

I second that...except buy a second gen, the IRS will handle alot more power than the solid axle and most manual equipped gxl cars came with a 4.10 LSD

All iron stroker 416 W2 with 3.91 gears. 9.98 was the best, ran ten teens all the time.

They look WAY better too... as in, i actually like the look ov them, especially the Turbo II ones. But the downside is weight... as a general rule, second gen is 300lbs heavier than 1st, all things equal. If we're looking for the best speed to cost ratio, 300 is a ton. Plus, if you cant get a 1st gen RX-7 for free you're not looking hard enough. I'd just assume that to break 10's even in a 2500lb car you'd be changing the rear anyways.

My friend, who is not particularly gifted in building light cars, built a first gen RX-7 with a mild 302, T-5, and (for some reason) a Ford 9". The thing could still lose a lot ov weight, he drives it to work, its already gone 11's. He's some nitrous away from 10's, and has about $6000 in the thing from start to finish.

There was a guy local to me a couple years ago with a 2nd gen RX that had a junkyard/swap meet 306 with a old detroit turbo and an air to water intercooler made from an old cooler with a c-4 trans...car weighed 3100 with him in it 6'4 about 250lbs and the car ran mid 6's in the 1/8th stock rear diff. I bet he had probably $4k in the whole car lol

How much nitrous? What did it run on motor?

My original combo was way LOW $$$... $200 Duster, 8 3/4 with 3.91 (came in a free car), 727 with a manual valve body ($500), $200 Ebay 8" converter, $50 shot out hooker fenderwell headers, engine was a bone stock 400 ($300 on ebay), used a free Comp .501 cam, and out of the box edelbrocks ($1200 the only thing that I paid full $$$ for) and a big shot plate system with 225 jetting... Went 10.50s all day long on 91 octane... Originally when I got it running I was about $5K into it with a cromoly cage, and mini tubs...

used M1 intake 750 carb
big shot plate .63 jet
727 w/brake
44k ptc converter
