I'm looking for an aluminum deep pan for the 518 before I swap it in, and cannot for the life of me find one that includes both a drain plug, and temperature sending bung. A bit of a noob question here.... Can a steel temperature bung be welded into an aluminum pan?

You could drill and tap an aluminum pan for the temp sending unit. If your looking for different aftermarket trans pans already setup for a temp probe, search for aftermarket trans pans used on the newer trucks with the 47/48RE transmissions.
Something like the MagHytec pan $237.50 (much nicer than the PML pan for about $10 more.)

That one above should be OK on a car, the double deep pans like the ATS (holds 5 additional quarts) may hang down too much?

You would be a rich man if you could weld steel to alum.

Yow deep a pan do you want ? stock for that trans or deeper ?

I'm looking for a pan with at least 2 extra quarts worth of capacity. Anything more than that though and I think clearance will start to become an issue.

451Mopar: That is a nice pan, but wow is that pricey. It costs half of what I paid for the TC.

B&M has a nice one for 727/518 has a drain plug and includes the filter extension. Would it be difficult to tap the aluminum pan for a temp sender, and still have it seal?

I put a B&M pan on my 2004.5 CTD. It's about the same depth as the stock diesel pan, but has a drain plug. It was the cheapest one I could find and it doesn't leak. The reuseable gasket that comes on the new trucks is nice too!!

I've also heard that electron beam welding can weld aluminum to steel. Sort of out of my price range on most projects.
