I have a M4589 cater fuel pump for a 1973 Barracuda with a 440, the issue I am having is the outlet is facing toward the block perpendicular and there isn't enough clearance for the fuel line. I think I need the style pump with a threaded connection for the outlet with an elbow, would I be correct in my thinking and if so which pump is that. I have a stock 5/16 line at the moment with a mild built 440. I also vaguely remember that there was a metal fuel from the working its way thought back to the carburetor is this also correct and if so where might I find such a line. My first build and my tear down was quite a bit ago and I am having a hard time remembering where everything goes.

Got a picture of the pump?

Some pumps can be taken apart and the halves/sections clocked to face the inlet/outlet the way they need to face to clear everything.

Nope, can't rotate that one. I'd say take it back and see what another one looks like. Maybe they assembled it wrong.

Maybe it's for a different year that has the rad. hose on the other side.

But then a '73 Barracuda never did come with a 440. You'll probably have to look in the book at the store to see which has the outlet fitting in the proper/better position. Or someone here should know what to get and the part number.

take it back and call summit. Holley and Carter sell pumps that you can rotate the entire bottom of the pump. This also allows you to replace the diaphram if it blows. Or you could just ask the parts guy if you and look for one that has a "screw in" fitting, that way you can elbow it.

you can still put a short 90 deg elbow in it and fasten it with short peices of hose or just bend a 90 yourself and connect it with hose.if you have about 1 inch to play with.

you would need an 5/16 male inverted flare x 5/16 femal inverted flare x 90* to elbow that fuel pump

if they even make that fitting

the older carters that can have the bottom clock is the way to go and a much better fuel pump

If one of your parts houses has an Edelman fittings section cabinet, they have an amazing array of fittings. According to the water pump inlet thread on this page you just need an early (pre '73) WP housing, they're pretty common and the pic is a common parts house "airtex" low perf fuel pump and very probably a '74 up fuel pump will have the fittings clocked different as a '74 up water pump housing inlet is on the same side as the fuel pump & obviously the fuel pump location never changed so '74 up they were kissing cousins on the pass side. I know on SB's those "airtex" pumps w the crimped seal come in several clockings and a select few of em if you search are actually 3/8" and I'm drilling my SB "airtex" which is required (class rules) to 3/8" nipples for more flow though I've yet to have starvation at 6200 RPM (~300 horse 360 9-1 2bbl) w a stock "airtex" 5/16" fuel pump. Holler how it turns out
