Rebuild cone type sure-grip?

Has anyone rebuilt a cone type sure-grip? I know it is said that they're non-rebuildable but I found this on the site: http://www.moparts.org/Tech/Archive/axle/13.htmlSounds pretty simple to rebuilt and cheaper than a clutch type (I have access to a machining shop). Correct me if I'm wrong but the sure-grip is a result of the friction of the cone and the case? That way I could machine the cones several times before the unit will be rendered useless. I could get a cone unit for $120 - seller has no info about internal condition (got it part of a package deal) - original seller said it's ok. Good price?

I rebuilt mine. I took 0.080" off each cone in a lathe and then put it back together with two 0.040" shims. Been on the car like that for 5 years and still working fine.

 did the same thing, worked perfect.

Just pulled one out of my dads challenger - 383 4 speed car - he bought it new and it now has 114,000 miles on it It lasted that long towing, daily driving and the occasional blast down the track with slicks. One side was shot -the other cone was fine, but instead of band-aiding it he went with a Eaton Truetrac to get another 100k out of the rear

a member here on the board sell SS washer ready to install with directions on the how too Trwaters IIRC maybe PM him for a set of the washers/spacers and go for it  I have seen a few still going after one rebuild so far i will be doing mine soon as well good luck and post pics of the build

Tom, I'm not trying to take business from you but the cone type is what it is ... a bad design , but it does excel in one area , it generates business for replacement
Look at the current auburn cone type, it's a bigger piece of carp than the old Borg Warner
