This was just a cam swap. Is it normal for the rotor to be pointing a little past the 3:00 position with a 4 degree advanced cam key installed with everything at TDC? First time for doing this but something doesn't seem right. Thanks

You're talking about the rotor in the distributor, right?

The rotor can be anywhere. Find top dead center and wherever the rotor is pointing is #1.

...or keep restabbing the distributor gear until you get #1 where you want it!

Thanks. That is what I thought. My concern was this was just a cam swap and it was off that far from the factory key.

W it dot to dot,(crank gear-12o'clock and cam gear-6o'clock) #6 cyl is ready to fire. Turn the crank slightly CCW till the marks are at 10 BTDC (15 if radical cam) as you need adequate cyl cranking psi then turn the dist till the nearest reluctor blade is dead even w the magnet AND the rotor is under (or close to) #6 plug wire terminal & yes you can reclock the inter gear to put the order anywhere you want but the OE order (SB I'm assuming, #1 forward and slightly to the pass side which'd place #6 to the rear & slightly to the dr side) is good standardization practice. FYI Some aftermarket timing sets have a complicated system of marks on the gears to denote straight up/2 or 4 adv/2 or 4 deg ret
