I'm rebuilding a 3spd shifter is there a special grease? Does anybody know if there are parts available for a 3spd shifter. I'm looking for the shift plates between the levers. Brewers carries 4spd stuff and if it crosses over to a three spd your lucky but does not stock ant 3spd specific stuff.

Do you use wheel bearing grease or is it something different?

I used wheel bearing grease on 5 speed shifter parts because its heavy enough to stay put and at least help reduce vibration. I don't know on the shifter parts. Its a bit of a long shot but may be worth checking a dealer.

I've pulled apart a couple of new Hurst mechanisms and they had a nasty black grease that looked to be molybdenum disulfide. That's what I used to assemble them, MIL-G-21164 moly grease.

Correct or not, I've used red wheel bearing grease and never had a problem.

pacifica, what does the grease look like in the tube? Does it look like lithium grease, wheel bearing or moli-grease. Does it say what it is on the tube?

The tube does not list "ingredients". Here is a pic of what is inside. Looks like what John described in above post. I think any of the lubes mentioned above will work fine.

I only posted the pic cause I got this stuff many years ago when I sent my shifter in to get rebuilt. At the time for $15.00, you could send your "Hurst shifter" back to Hurst and they would make it like new and ship it back. They included this tube with my shifter

Thanks for the picture. I'm sure all of the above will work fine. I was trying to see if there was a specific shifter grease. I will try to find some now that I know.

My 1968 SM states lubricate with light engine oil FWIW. grease picks up to much grit if you drive a lot
