I have a 1970 Challenger RT with an automatic transmission made in March 1970. My question is should the shifter plate have the words SLAP STIK on the bottom of this plate ? Or would this plate be correct for later made cars ? I have also seen plates that are marked P,R,N,D,2,1 with no slap stik. Which one is correct ?

IMHO the 70's did not have the slap stick on them....or should I say my 4 don't.

Take care,

Twenty plus years ago pretty much every E body shifter plate said "Slap Stik" the only thing you saw that looked like an E body shift plate that didn't was on a Cordoba/Charger...Now I think they've become interchangable....

Gotcha. Never noticed that.

I had a guy ask me about that at Carlisle. Told him I just wasn't sure what E bodies had that.

My August '69 Challenger says "Shift Gate". The car has changed hands alot through the years, so I couldn't be positive it was original, but it's definately a 1970 as it uses the round shift knob instead of the rectangle for the T handle.

I'd LOVE to hear more on this topic!

My 13 Oct '69 Challenger R/T does not say Slap Stick on the shift bezel. I have seen one other non altered R/T with an Oct '69 build date that did not say Slap Stick.

Anyone else find one that says Shift Gate? Surely I don't have the only one.

We're learning the 74's here that have round ball style shifter handles instead of T-handles, too many than to be a gear head swap to the old style shifter, really starting to look that way. Tav, I vaguely recall reading in a Mopar mag how the earliest of shifter plates said Shift Gate, then again I may be mistaken, since your car is 'one' of the first cars off the line with an Aug build date, this still may indeed be a fact. Hold onto it none the less and suspect it is original to your car until more comes in.

No question that many of the '74 E-bodies came with the ball shifter instead of the T-handle - I have parted out a few in my day.

Also a number got the woodgrain wheel as well.

I would suspect that since it was the end of the line for E-bodies, there was an order to use up as much existing stock as they could from the plants.
