Just build a 408

Seriously though a 302 head can be made to flow at least 220 and 163 with 1.88 1.60 valves. I have a set that has been CNC ported and that is what they flow at .500.

Dave would you have any advice/tips for home porting a set? 1.88/1.60 on the valves right?

wow, that's 18CFM better than RyanJ got on the exhaust port of a maxed out 302 IIRC.

so for all that porting, they flow about the same as stock mags, or less than the LA intake pattern enginequest 318B's you can buy new from hughes engines assembled for $725/pr

Hughes Iron Ram heads

as cheap as these are, I can't see spending the money on building used LA heads if they need new valves.

Sorry guys, I did not port them myself, I have no CNC machine, I just got a screamin deal on them or else I was going to get a set of the EQ or RHS magnum style heads, I even have some nice 1.7 roller rockers for the magnums but I got thease cheap enough to run them and save the rockers for somethin else. They look like miniture W2 ports. They were done for a high end super stock engine so port volumes are still original 302 head size, much smaller than a magnum.

302 heads are a good, cheap way to get a little more hp and they are closed chambered which is a good way to bump compression. The 308 head is the same head but had bigger valves. these were used on the 360's. these heads are good performers with mild porting.

The 308 head is not the same as the 302 with bigger valves.

As said, the 302 is a closed chamber head, that will give you an easy compression boost on a 318.

The 308 is an OPEN chamber head, just like any other 360 head. It is the best flowing iron head until the 1992 Magnums came into production. The main improvement over the earlier 360 heads is the exhaust port design. Downside, is that installing the 308 (or any 360 head) is going to drop your already low 318 compression even lower.

For a low budget, mild build, go with the 302's. If you have money to mill the deck, upgrade pistons, then go with the 308's. The 308's are typically much harder to find than the 302's.

That's the great thing about Moparts! I think most of us learn stuff here.
