JD,
I'm not 100% sure but I thought the A-bodies used a 2 piece head pipe on at least one side, only welded together.

Good talking to ya btw

Bill, on the driver's side, it is 2" front section with a flattened area to clear the torsion bar and that goes a short ways and then is welded into a 2.25" pipe back. Technically, it is "two piece" but always from the factory, it has been "one piece". I have the original pipes and got them from the dealership back when you still could do so.

RdRunner JD, I can take pictures for you to show you how far the 2" section goes if you'd like?

Drivers side was one piece 2.25" all the way as shown on this NOS one picked up recently at an old dealership, 2925783, 69 A-body 340.

Mcannix,
I am not trying to be argumentative but that is not what my 1969 340 cars came with. I have had a 1969 340 Cuda and Dart and both came with stock pipes and I kept the front sections from them. I replaced them with original pipes; one in 1976 and one in 1980. These shots show what the originals and replacements looked like.

I can tell you Arvin and I think Walker and AP and Goerlich had the single piece pipe but the dealership original and replacements on my 69 340 were like these images show; 2" from the manifold and then they crushed down to less than half that then went up to 2.25 before the crossmember.

And here is the shot to show where it jumps up to 2.25". No wonder fixing this side made about 10 HP on 340s.

Mecannix, that is the pass side I am pretty sure :). I have mine and it is 2.5" and then drops to 2.25" like that. I'll get a shot for you.

Here is why swapping the Driver's side to a better flowing one really helps at 5800 rpm.

And here you can see, like Mcannix' shot clearly shows, 2.5" going down to 2.25" on the pass side.

I just went in the garage and that's exactly like the original one that's still on my 68 340 Barracuda.

The 340 a-body headpipes are some of the most critical fitting headpipes to manufacture and to be consistant from one car to the next. This was a nightmare for the vendors that originally built these pipes for Chrysler as some of your pictured samples demonstrate with the nos parts. Issues included starter , pitman arm and torsion bar clearance. Most of our customers in the past 15 years have appreciated fit and flow
of the two piece design over the possible no-fit and severe restricted smashed pipes. We do however offer by special order the one piece headpipes as the originals for those that would like these fit/flow issues built into their pipes.
The left side was originally a 2" flange pipe that was slid into a 2.25" intermediate pipe with a weld at that connection. The right side was a full one piece 2.25" headpipe. Both sides had severely smashed and flattened sections installed for clearance issues and were of cold rolled steel material.

My high school shop teacher had a muffler bender on loan for one summer. I had never bent pipe before in my life. I bought some 2.5 sticks and gave it a shot on my 68 340 barracuda. What was I thinking!!

Started with the passenger side (easier). Took me days and got an "ok" fit. After that I just said forget about that driver side headpipe. No way I was going to pull that off in 2.5". So 12 years later... My car still has full 2.5 pipe on the passenger side and factory 2" and less pipe on the driver side.

I have a "special" alignment to compensate for the pulling more on one side to the next.

Kidding aside, it's got to be tough cramming 2 lbs of c#!p into a 1 lbs bag.
