On my 383 70 RoadRunner when I got it first running it would for several days at a time and crank right up. Now after it is drove a while it has to really crank alot before it starts. I also have a 340 in another car that is the same way. I know the heat has a lot to do with it but what could have changed on the 383? Everthing is new. Thanks Ronnie

Use mini-starters if you don't have them already especially with headers. Makes a world of difference plus today's gas does effect hot restarts too.

I sounds like you are having issues with the fuel boiling/evaporating out of the carburator. An electric fuel pump, insulating the carb with a phenolic baseplate and rerouting your fuel line away from direct heat soak could help.

What has changed on it? When I first got it running it could set for a week and crank rite up. The gas seems to be draining back in it. Would the fuel pump stop the gas from draining back in it. Is there a fuel gauge are a valve I can put in it to stop this? I know when i first got it running i would let it set and run for several hours and i stayed primed. I'm sure on my 340 it is purcolating all the gas out of the carb but I don't have room to put a spacer under it. Thanks for any advice. Ronnie

Gas can't drain back from a carb. For one, the fuel bowl is lower than the input fuel line so your fuel would have to be draining back uphill. Fuel is most likely evaporating out. It's said the newer ethanol blend fuels evaporate faster, and the winter blend fuels even faster yet. Only other option if your fuel is going away would be fuel leaking out of the carb.

next time b 4 you crank it take off the air cleaner & see if the AP still has fuel (squirts good) when you crack the throttle

Same issue here. I am going to install a small electric pump to prime the system. Last summer I put about a half inch of gas in an old spray paint cap and left it on the bench next day it was gone, and I mean bone dry in less than 24 hours. It evaporated that quick.

I don't have a working choke on either one of the cars, and I know if I did they would start better. I just can't figure why the 383 was starting so good for it to stop doing it. The carbs on both of them are not leaking and they are different kinds on each one. The 383 has a Edlebrock 750 on it and I know they aren't suppose to be good but I haven't had any trouble out of it. On the 340 I have a Carter 650. I guess I'll just keep messing with them and see what happens. Ronnie

I missed that, it started acting up out of the clear blue sky w no changes on your part & (so far) no obvious cause? EDIT just thinking out loud, wondering if it is ign related & not fuel, check spark quality at a plug & reluctor gap/pickup continuity anything in that area

That's why the "gas formulation change" theory makes sense.

It's Swifty! Swifty, you toad sucker!

The 383 started doing this last summer so there wasn't any winter mix in it. Ronnie
