Thanks for all the input guys. I am going to advise him to use a sure grip style diff. His car will see little track time.

There's no sense in telling people how foolish you are.

Nothing wrong w/ a spool on the street. Rain or shine, doesn't matter about the spool. What does matter is the tires. Drag radials or street slicks are scary on wet pavement. Doesn't matter what differential you have if you're on tires w/ minimal tread and trying to drive on wet pavement.

I went with a spool after my sure grip took a dump. I drive it on the street occasionally. I just make sure that I don't make any sharp turns around corners. It sort of comes naturally, after dragging 53' trailers around for the past 20 years.

The Scamp had a spool in it. I got caught in the rain once and it made me a little nervous, but otherwise, I didn't mind it. It chirped the tires around corners, but it also made me drive the care carefully. I probably wouldn't drive a spool-equipped street car by choice again, but I'm certainly not against them.

My CJ-7 has Detroits front and rear, though I keep the front hubs unocked on the street. With a 7 inch lift, 35 inch tires, and a short wheelbase, it can be squirrelly in the rain, which I try to avoid. Otherwise, the occasional "bang" from the locker is the only time I notice it on the street. On the trail, they're worth their weight in gold.
