I'm getting ready to do my Duster, I've seen alot of variations of FC7,need to know which paint supplier in dead on. I'm sure this subject has been posted before..did a search with no luck.

Probably PPG since they made the stuff originally, but you can have any paint brand adjusted to match what you want.

If you feel need to match the exact factory shade using a modern urethane paint (cars originally had acrylic enamel) then the best bet is to take a paint sample from an area of the car that didn't get exposed to the elements and have the paint store tint the paint to match.

I thought Sherwin-Williams was the supplier back in 70 (???

I would try to look at all of them to judge for yourself. FC7 is like FM3 (panther pink/moulin rouge) LOTSA variation out there. I would pick the one that looks right to you.

The last time it was painted in 89' it was Sherwim-Willaims seems to looks right. But, wanted some more imput. Thanks for the help.

there is like three different plum crazy/in violet colors. there is an alt. 1 and an alt 2 i believe on top of the regular color. all three are slightly different.

with him...but also wonder why you're worried about it. You could park 10 of that color car next to each other and wouldn't know the difference between paints. Put what YOU like on the car, not someones idea of the perfect match or whatever. Nobody's gonna care what shade or hue the color is as long as it looks good!

I bought a 70 Chally that was factory plum crazy. it was repainted in sherwin williams and the color was too light and silvery for me.
I used PPG and it was much darker and richer color. It seemed very correct to my eye..

Back in the day, the factory FC7 color was burned, baked,peeling in three or 4 years ! One of the worst colors to keep original.. , the UV really attacked it...

Yeah, I remember back in the early 80s, there was a purple 70 Charger running around my home town, the tops were down to the primer.

Around the same time, there was a purple 71 Demon in my local junkyard. Almost all of the purple was GONE, just primer and surface rust.

I agree, I have seen several Plum Crazy cars that appeared to be too light or too much metal flake. The last three cars I have had done were all PPG and the color looks very close to the original 1970 painted spare tire I have. Since the tire has been out of the sun most of its life, I consider it to be the measurement standard for the purple cars I have had.

Nope PPG was the original paint used on these cars. Also if you really want to match the original you have to use single stage.
