On a 528 (May 28, '71) SPD 1971 340 'Cuda with A31 (3.91s) & S74 (quick ratio power steering) which style power steering pump is correct (Federal or Saginaw)?

& should it have a power steering cooler??

Dan,

My 340 convertible (3/31/71) is a Fast Ratio S74 car, and it has the Federal pump, and 2891232 hose (stamped, with service number being 3420193). Since it has a 3.23 ratio axle, it has no cooler. More than likely, yours should. I would question a Saginaw pump being on a Fast Ratio car, cooler or not.

Yes, as luck would have it, the bulletin is at my warehouse.

The 2891218 pump is definitely a Saginaw, and the 3004799 is definitely a Federal.

The 3404435 splash shield is the standard plastic unit, and the 3583003 splash shield is the steel unit with the stapled-on seal, made of masticated rubber. The E-Body steel shields, used on Fast Ratio cars only, are actually factory modified versions of the B-Body shields from previous years, with a different seal for E-Body as well.

With regard to the hose, however, and per the bulletin, the 2891208 is NOT what was factory installed on my Fast Ratio car.

Hose combinations as follows:

Federal Fast Ratio: Service 3420193 (Stamped 2891232) Used on A-Body cars also.

Federal Standard: Service 3420194 (Stamped 2891214)

Saginaw: Service 2891208 (Stamped 2891208)
