in my efforts to be cheap...I see lots of flywheels for internal balance motors, but I need one for a magnum 360, i.e. external balance.
I know the "REAL" answer is to get it balanced on the crank, but I don't want to tear down this complete, good condition, low mileage motor just for a balance job.
Besides, didn't the factory just say "this is close enough for every production 360 we make" and balance the flywheels accordingly?
is there anywhere to look up the specs to know how to drill a flywheel to make it an external balance for a 360? would any machine shop have that information?
or should I continue to be patient and cheap, or spend the money on a new flywheel?

A flywheel balanced to factory specs should be as good as the factory job. Rick E/Mopar Action published the specs and DIY instructions some time ago. I know I couldn't find the back issue.
How about a JY or used OE Magnum wheel?
I have no problem with a used OE magnum flywheel--infact, I THINK that will be perfect...since I want the 130 tooth ring gear for the starter, and as long as it meets the bolt pattern on my clutch! I already have a centerforce dual friction clutch for my TKO trans with the 26 spline disc, the disc and pressure plate together are kit number DF148552, which is an 11" clutch.
I have no idea what the factory clutches were behind the magnum engines. the perfect solution could possibly be to balance my current Hayes flywheel that's on the big block, which is an internal balance flywheel right now.
the other problem with OE stuff from a junkyard or Ebay etc. is that 95% of all the 5.9L Magnums came with automatics!
the end goal here is a 90% stock 5.9L magnum with a carb and electronic ignition, headers, and a Hughes magnum whiplash cam, so "as good as factory" is good enough, this thing isn't going to be spinning any more than 5500-6000 rpm

I believe one of the mopar engine books has how to balance a neutral balance flywheel for a 360 LA and a 360 magnum.
That being said, if that is listed there, and is identical to factory, It will work fine. No factory crank/flywheel combination was balanced together...they are all mass produced. You will be fine.
That being said, If you aren't planning on installing a scattershield, I'd certainly prefer a billet SFI flywheel.

ok Mr know-it-all...WHERE in the tech archives?! I didn't see anything in the trans section, engine general section or small block specific section. Google search also returned very little other than a lot of people saying "buy the right 5.9L Magnum flexplate for your engine swap" which just reconfirms that 95% of these motors are coupled with automatic transmissions!
