Who knows the CFM rating for the muscle era Carter carburetors? I have an AVS from a 71 Chrysler 300 with a 440 and a 727. The FSM tells nothing. I also wondered the ratings of the 68-71 340 and the 67-71 383. Who has the info? Thanks.

see the "AFB QUESTION" thread further down. QuickD100 posted CFM's for the diff venturi sizes which'd very likely be the same for OE type AFB's/AVS's. EDIT those are base plate throttle bore dia's. I just checked my 4131S AFB which is listed for a '66 440 & it's 1&7/16" & 1&9/16" which'd be (750) but I think Carters' published specs are a bit happy

IIRC the Carter AFB's were rated at a different specification than Holleys. Different "inches of water". Or so I've heard.

I posted the venturi diameters for their carbs, the throttle plate diameters are not the same as the venturi diameters, case in point.
The 500's and 625's both use 1-7/16 promary throttle plates, the secondaries throttle plates measure 1-11/16 on both.
The info comes out of Dave Emanuel's "Super Tuning and Modifying Carter Carburetors". Dave

Yeah, but where did HE get the info? The old Mopar Performance Clinic literature had vastly lower numbers than those usually quoted.

Dave when I measured my throttle bores & got the 1&7/16/1&9/16 that's what made me think that it was supposed to be the throttle bores & not the venturi's. I stand corrected

IIRC the quick way to know the size is if the plates are all the same size, it is a small carb, if they are different then it is the bigger one.

I don't think this statement accurately captures the different sizes. The large AFB will have 1 11/16" primary and secondary throttle plates.

1 7/16 & 1/9/16 is a small AFB. I don't think there was anything from 66 that had the large AFB.

The old Direct Connection (?)clinic literature says something like 650 for the large AVS (440 HP), and 550(?) for the smaller AVS (340, 383 & non-hp 440). I lost the old article link in a computer crash.

I realize that carter and holley rate their carbs differently but how else do you define their sizes? I just use the companies listed sizes and call it good.Dave

Are we all talking about the same thing? AVS vs. AFB

More specifically...... I have the original carburetor from a 71 Chrysler 300, a Carter AVS, and I wanted to know if anyone had the CFM size. I guess with an apples to oranges definition of flow rate, it must be impossible to tell.
