Whats the deal with the Max Wedge heads Mopar Performance is selling, P5007494 and P5249824. They seem pretty cheap. Do they flow as well as the original Max Wedge heads? Do they need tons of work before you can use them? Tell me what you know.

The 494s are $650 each, NHRA legal and have 2.08/1.88 valves, the 824s are 2.14/1.81 and not NHRA legal, and $660 each. I'm not sure what else is different between the two, but they both apparently have the cast pedestals and I know the 494s are revised for 6 bolt valve covers and the ports are apparently also revised, although I'm not sure in what way.
It sure seems cheap for heads that flow 300 CFM. I know they're not the best ports compared to what the aftermarket offers now from a flow vs size standpoint, but they do work. How did yours work for you? Did they need any real work?

Call Dwyane Porter, I'm pretty certain he has had a set or two thru the shop. He will let you know the real deal.

Where did you come up w/ that flow #? IIRC, "stock" MW heads were more like 240-260 CFM. Or are you talking about w/ porting?

They were retooled circa mid 2007 along with many other items. Compared to the prev. generation that had super rough, very small ports....these new ones are much smoother, larger and much closer to oe max wedge stuff.
The chambers appear to be coming through on the small side (77-78cc), so if they need to be nhra legal, plan on a little work in that area. Kind of nice to leave them alone for a 440-452 street/strip deal with a flat top, though.
300 seems like kind of a stretch, but is probably do-able? I'm sure the prototypes were flow tested but somehow that data was never dropped into my lap.

I'd like to know where that number came from also ...

Here are some pictures of the new casting Max Wedge heads.
I'm glad they retooled the head w/o the freeze plug in front. Now they look correct. Just grind off that M after the 518.

I bought a set of MP MW heads last year and had them flowed. Head & Valve Size/Valve Lift> .200 .300 .400 .500 .600 .700 MP 518M 2.14 Int. Unported 145 202 237 253 268 277 MP 518M 1.81 Ex. Unported 113 152 174 190 200 206 The ports are untouched except for a blending of the valve job into the port. Not stock, but nothing exotic either.

I believe these are the older castings. There is a "99" on top of the intake ports. I'm assuming this was cast in 1999.

I also have a set of old 286 Stage I heads. I had them flowed on another bench (homemade deal calibrated with the Superflow laminar flow element from the dyno). Only the intake was flowed as his rig wasn't setup to flow a Mopar exhaust.

How mild a port? Bowl blend and "shine" job?

I would say it's about an average port job, some enlargement but no welding or epoxy or brass to put it in the wild category. Actually the flow is from two heads ported by different people, but the flow numbers for both were within a few CFM at all points. The orange head was said to be ported by Lee Shephard, but there is no documentation to prove that. The exhaust seats were replaced.

finally got a chance to dig through my notes. these numbers are for a set of the NHRA version head.....2.08/1.88 valves. this is one of the newer heads without the freeze plugs in the ends, but it isnt the latest version with the "undersized" chamber. also, the valves i used were modified in a way which seems to perk up the low lift numbers a bit. the valves were out of an NHRA stocker head, so i'm not going to get into the details of what was done. aside form the valves though, this head is right OOTB. no valve job, nothing.
this head was tested on a 4.250 bore(426 size), instead of the 4.375 i usually test BB stuff on. 28" test pressure, 3/4" thick radius plate air entry.
lift-----I/E .100--68.4/57.7 .150-110.6/76.4 .200-150.5/96.7 .250-184.2/116.6 .300-208.6/131.4 .350-222.5/145.1 .400-230.0/158.0 .450-241.2/167.9 .500-249.5/177.3 .550-258.1/184.8 .600-265.5/189.0
i have some numbers for the ones with the freeze plugs somewhere. i'll dig around and see if i can find them. as i recall.......they werent as good as these.
looking at the pics Randy posted, his look like the latest version, which i would expect to be slightly better than the numbers above. his is the 2.14/1.81 version, and the 2.14 valve should be worth something.
