IM installing a stock bronze pilot bushing in my steel crank 383. Its very tight going in..I was going to heat the crank a little bit and then freeze the bushing, but then i got to thinking.

Are all factory steel crank 383's drilled to fit pilot bushings? And if they werent drilled would the hole even be close to the size that you think you would be able to drive a bushing into?

Can I just remove some material from the outside of it?

Clean the crank hole, chamfer the leading edge of the bushing for easier hole entry, freeze bushing then install. Your only going to cause more fitment issues by hammering on it with out any progress.

Not all cranks are bored to the correct inside diameter...beware of this. If your crank has an unfinished hole you can get an undersize bushing that may or may not be a decent fit. If the bushing fits too tightly it will crush too much and the trans shaft will not fit.

Clean the crank hole...

In addition, may I add that I always use a brake cyl. hone to clean it up. You need a small one of course. A KD 267 is perfect.

That's the tool my machinist used when he installed the pilot bushing in my 1966 440 crank.
The pilot bushing hole was there, but with the engine coming out of an automatic car it was unfinished and needed some work to make the bushing fit.

I forgot to add common sense must be used when fitting.

I cheated when I did mine.

Freeze the bushing. Clean the hole in the crank and make sure it's got a chamfer. Once it's prepped, hang a balancer puller off the crank. Slide the frozen bushing between the crank and puller. Use a plate between the ram and bushing. Crank away but do it before the bushing thaws out.

This is just a random photo of the puller I grabbed from the net. I have a pic of my install at home but I'm not sure if it's on my current hard drive or the one that fragged.

I suggest you use the newer style bearing in the torque converter hub register instead of the bronze bushing.
