Would like some opinions on my E58 360 in my 79 300. It would give me a big cloud of smoke out of the exhaust after it sat for awhile. So I replaced the valve seals and now it doesn't smoke after sitting a while, but it smokes out of the drivers side exhaust when you shut it off and restart it a few minutes later. It continues to smoke for a few minutes and when you drive it you can see just a faint hint of smoke out the drivers side pipe. Also running at highway speed around 3000 RPM and you let off the throttle to get off at an exit it smokes. I got a idea what I need to do, but would like a few opinions please.

What color smoke? Since you replaced valve seals I'm thinking blue?

Yeah, blueish white smoke. The engine has about 75K on it, runs good, no distinctive miss. When I replaced to seals they where hard, but not crumbling apart like some I have done. I did them last week and drove the car to Carlisle Friday and Saturday, putting about 500 miles on it. It used about a Quart of oil in that amount of time.

Check for an intake leak. My Duster had the same issue, slight smoking and oil consumption numbers. There was only a quarter inch long crack in the passenger side gasket, near the bottom, just enough to pull oil. I put a new set on and no more smoke, still full of oil after 700 miles and running great. Just a thought.

Was the gasket that bad that it sucked oil from inside the engine into the intake?

I can't speak for what happened on this E58, but that is more or less what happened to mine. It had a small crack on the right side gasket on the bottom. Presumably, when letting off the gas, it was pulling the oil through the crack and burning it through the exhaust and combustion chamber, thus causing the blue smoke and oil consumption. The vacuum was pulling oil out of the valley; there was slight discoloration in the corresponding intake runner.

Well at this point a set of intake gaskets is a cheap investment before I pop the heads off. Thanks for the suggestions Guys

I've heard that sometimes you can try retightening the intake and that'll take care of it. That's my first step, but it's a new engine, and the intake was just a skosh loose after about 100 miles. Hoping it works.
