HI , I HAVE A CAM QUESTION.
I am building a 410 (360) stroker

It has 587 cast iron heads, ported with 2.02 and 1.60 valves bowl work ect...
it flows aprox 250ish at 500 lift for the int, amd 168ish on the ex.
1.5 ALU rockers
It will be 10.02:1 CR with forged pistons, scat crank and rods int ballanced, I have an rpm airgap, with a holley 770 avenger carb,
it also has hooker super comp 1 5/8 long tube headers. it also hasa 904 auto with a 2800 stall and extra clutches and low 1st gear set installed w/ shift kit. the Dakota also has 3:55 gears going to 3:73 8.8 phord rear 5 on 4.5 lugs soon.

it also has FBO ignition system w/out Vac advance.

what cam would be a good choice for my street drivin 96 dakota I do have the comp XE274H cam 230/236 @488/491 lift from my current old combo w/only a brake in run. would this camshaft be good or should I use a different one. I am told this cam should be ok and would idle like a stock engine. what are your thoughts. and plz tell me about the .906 cams?

thanks

Don

What are you using for rocker arms? That has alot to do with which cam you should use. And valve springs??

1.5 ALU proform rocker, should I use 1.6 instead, the V-sprongs are the recomended ones for the cam listed above.. and have been checked.

I'd use the cam you have, personally, 1) I'm cheap, so why by another when you have a perfectly good cam and 2) for a street vehicle, that should be a nice cam for a 408, and probably give excellent idle-5500 RPM performance.

I have a cam very similar to yours in my 408 and it's a stump puller. Returned 18 MPG on it's first run also. Should be able to get a little more with some tuning.

have your balance on that scat crank/rods/pistons checked IF you had it balanced by Scat. Scat doesnt match their pistons weights or the rod ends so you can be off a bunch on your balance job. They take the weights off the box (one weight for all the pistons) and these can be off significantly. Scats balance isnt up to performance industry standard (but probably better than a production job)

I agree with Patrick on this one...you could probably get away with a little more cam and be perfectly happy, but the difference in performance probably wouldn't justify the cost.

Should be a great engine with good low-end, VERY strong mid-range, and a decent pull to around 5200-5500 rpm.

You could go custom but you dont have to. You have one that will work. I also run the Crane hydraulic H302-2 (an older split pattern) with good results. But your static ratio is too high for smaller "nice idle" cams. At least if it's a true 10:1 with those heads. The H302-2 idles at 850rpm w/ 13" of vacuum in gear with an 870VS Avenger carb, small tube headers, and dished pistons at 0 deck making 9.5:1 true static, and 8.25:1 dynamic. In your Dak it would run low 12s with 3.55s if you could stick it. The 3800lbs+ E body it's in has run 105+ and mid13s with a 2.6 short time, 3.23s, and zero traction.

Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

already done, allied moter sports (strokerkits.com) ballanced my stuff, ok seem maybe i will keep the comp cam, and just install new lifters.. the old ones look fine, only ran them during a break in, but i beleive coolant mixed with oil ran trough them, so i dont know if they are anygood or not..

thanks for the input

according to allied Motor sports, it will be a 10.2 CR with a 40 quench area.. im not sure what the deck height or what pistons were used..I let them do all the matching and CnC machining..
