Chapper, This is a RARE pic. This car was lost in a fire at Eddies place and I have never seen a pic of it before. As you know there is one of his brother Larry's 70 lettered the West Virginia Mountianeer floating around.

Any history on the car? Is it one of the'71 convertibles previously in this thread?

I was going to ask on the other picture on this posting about the Cuda. The door says Vaugh Currie as mechanic, back in the 70's Vaugh Currie raced a Hemi 1970 Challenger with a four barrel at IHRA races. I haven't heard about him in a long time, does anyone know him or what he is up to now. If I remember right the car was called Big Red and yes it was a red 1970 Challenger. Thanks / Gary

It looks like this car was around for some time judging by the changes.

I am glad this thread continues.

I notice many of these cars were running these STAHL/MOROSO tires.

These were on my Challenger back in the 70's and I still have them. They are now on my 66 Hemi Coronet.

Close up. These things look great. Love the "pie crust" look.

I remember this car from back in 73 (I think) at Bristol for the IHRA Spring Nationals OR it could have been the Fall Nationals that year. Any way, Herb was sitting in the staging lanes and he had the top down and this thing had power windows. When he rollded the 1/4 window down, you could see the inside of the 1/4 panel where they had sprayed them with spray on foam to make them stiffer. It had been super acid dipped to lighten the metal panels. Apparently got left in the acid tank too long as it was too flimsey and they sprayed them to stiffen them up some. Car ran awesome fast and he pulled some GIANT wheel stands every launch as I remember. I never saw it at any other races after that race and we ran them all back in the 70's.

I don't have the budget to compete with the likes of Billy the Kid Stepp with the setup they have but it is way cool, even the pants!

Here are some pics of Vaughn and his 70 Challenger. Vaughn ran a number of cars and is still in touch with Herb today. We talked to Herb about Vaughn and he had some great stories. Vaughn ran a number of cars and if you watch the movie Two-Lane Blacktop they show Vaughns -RT or Super Bee in the Lakeland Dragstrip pits footage.

Thanks to Moparts member liteweight I have secured a set of the old style Keystone Klassic wheels for the back of my car (15x10)

Rather settle for the new design Cragar made Keystones

Now I just have to keep an eye out for a set of 15x4s of the same design for the front

Mark : Thank you for the information, it was a long time ago and when I saw Vaughn's name on the side of Herb's car just made me think about him. Glad Vaughn and Herb are still keeping in touch. Thanks / Gary

I saw this Don Garlits Dixco tach on ebay, a bit pricey but it lead me to thinking - what brand & model of tach would be period correct for an early '70s SS/DA car?
