I plan on testing out a few borrowed carbs on my GTX..between now and this spring. Can anyone steer me in the right direction on what electronic equipment I should be purchasing to set up the carb systems correctly? The exhaust system has a bung installed on the header collector, which was done for chassis dyno-testing,last spring. Thanks in advance for your opinions! Randy B.

did you want data record or just gauge readout?

Randy you can use my LM-1 if you want... since you
have a bung in already it would be easy... mine doesnt
record to the unit but if you can see it you can
get the number OR have someone read it

I like my LC-1 and it comes w/a disc so "smart people " can download the program so u can run a lap top and store and play back your runs later.

Thanks guys! Mike, that would be great! Maybe I can get it when I bring my 6 "little buddies" over for a visit shortly! My biggest concern is the A/F ratio at idle! I'd like to see what settings would give it the leanest(cleanest)exhaust emission...and still be "safe" BTW...what is considered the "IDEAL" A/F ratio(on the idle circuit) on a car like mine? 13-13.5-1? THANKS!

In the 14s... thats a no load condition... just
enough fuel to give a nice clean idle... but then
again you have one of them there bumpy 3/4 race cams

Thanks Mike! I want the plugs to look like the one on the right..even just idling around!..or is that a "pipe dream"? Actually, the cam's only an 11/16 street unit... Made more for docile street driving, than going fast!

Ok... the one on the left looks both oil and fuel soaked

I use the LM-2 and really like that it records to an SD card. Unless you have a stock cam, don't use the A/F reading to set idle. Just set it where it idles best. If you want to be cleaner just lean it out from there as much as you're willing to tolerate.

Ok... the one on the left looks both oil and fuel soaked Mike..that's why I want it to look like the one on the right! Thanks for the info,Cory! I'm just wondering if I can get the idle cleaned up with just the IAB's...not having to change the idle feed restrictors?

That's exactly 100% correct........ I don't even look at the O2 when setting idle mixuture......it can be really high or really low when it's idling best with very much camshaft......

i have tried carbs on my car that felt like monsters on the street but didnt do so hot at the track. depending on what you want out of your car, any testing not at the track or even a dyno would be a waste of time if your looking for the most HP out of your motor

I shoot for 13.8 or leaner at idle, the leaner the better Every motor and fuel is not the same as every other motor and fuel so use your meter to tune your car, don't be afraid to lean it out with the mixture screws and IAB

Thanks, feller's! Nuther' question...when using the LM-1 or other equipment, should the ambient temperature be at a standard degree..like 72*???

No.... you would be setting the A/F for the conditions
at that time... will it change due to temp and BP...
yes.... but I usually change a jet size with every 25*
of ambient so the idle will move some also... I would
wait till at least spring(since you dont drive it in
the winter) that way you would be closer to the summer
temps and conditions

I agree with Raff, the no load idle should be able to run close to Lambda=1.0 (stoichiometric), which on gas is 14.7 A/F. However, depending on the carb circuits, you may need a touch richer for throttle transition, etc.

Although I am running E85, I have leaned it out for no-load idle, and high idle around the pits at Lambda=1.0. This is primarily to put heat in the motor, but it is clean. However, my mechanical injection is much richer with the fuel valve in the full "ON" position for racing because of the simple way the system works.

Remember, the A/F numbers are just for reference when tuning. There is no magic number(s), just typical ranges like
idle 13.0-14.7
WOT 12.0-13.0

One of the nice things about recording A/F vs RPM is you can tune the fuel curve of your carb (air bleeds, jets, emulsion, etc). For example a carb at WOT might be 12.5 at 4000 rpm, but 11.5 (or 13.5) at 7000 rpm.

Jim maybe you would know.... is there a add on to
upgrade my LM-1 to record the data and rpm

as i understand it..YES you just need the software disc and a lap top..

i have a question:
my LM-1 has 2 sensors..what is the best location to install the bungs...
i have a 2-1 y/x pipe can i put a single bung in it or should i use both banks/bungs and sensors...?
cheapst

Thanks I'll check into it... as for your sensor I
put them in about 4" to 6" past the end of the
primaries in the collectors... I only have 1 sensor
but 2 bungs and after I use the sensor on each bank
I pull it out and plug the bungs... you dont want it down
stream of any e-vacs or near any open air
