Would that be a good cam for a 10 to 1 318 with 302 casting heads, LD4b, TTI headers and a 850 thermoquad? Can I put it in with out machining the valve guides? Will the factory type barbell lifters be OK? How bout a set of NOS 340 springs with dampers?

.468 lift
270 adv
224@.050
.022 lash

Same specs on in an ex

I think the cam would be great; why not use Comp's recomended lifter and spring, then there's no second guessing what will work.

I'd just pony up for the recommended comp 901's, they're only like $60. stock retainers work with them.

With the springs, I figured after lash the lift was almost identicle to a stock 340. Lifters are cheap, FREE! I already have the cam, a set of 273 lifters, and the new 340 springs. I have no money to spend on this cam swap so if I can't do it free then I can't do it. I was really just looking to spice up the MPG motor before I sell it, make it a little more atractive. Also IF these things will work together would this cam be OK with a factory high stall converter?

Just do it, I can see no problems. The cam lift is indeed in the ballpark. 340 springs should not be in coil bind with that lift. Retainer-to-guide clearance needs to be checked and possibly modified with a flat file, but I doubt it will need to be done. The solid cam will act like a slightly smaller hydraulic cam and with your compression you will not be overcamming the motor. I don't think it will need a high stall converter, but the 318 will have a lower stall speed than a larger engine with the same converter.

I think your mileage would be within 2 mpg with the new cam but same converter.
