The ECM on the fire wall next to the Volatge regulator? I've seen it done and it looks nice and like it belongs there. I usually put them on the inner fender.

no problem, not a bad idea to use some sort of stand-off mounting to get some air circulation around the backside but not critical in my experience

The electronics in the modules are usually design to with stand 85 degrees C or 185 degrees F underhood temps. Some of the newer designs have the 105 degree C or 221 degree F components. If the average temp in the mounting area is lower than the above it should live in that mounting location Ok.

I've never had any problems with them on the firewall.
