Can someone measure there 383 engine oil dipstick to verify my measurements. I measured 23 inches from tip to stop near the handle and 2-1/2 inches from bottom to the full mark. My oil level is higher than the full mark with 5 quarts of oil and new filter.

Oil dipstick length is not enough. You have to know the tube length also. I just checked that measurements for a friend's 1970 small block last week-end (he had a hand-made mark on his dipstick, almost an inch above the 'Full' mark, and wanted to know if that may be the real Full level. We checked on a friend's 1973 cuda, and both the tube and dipsticks were of different lengths. I measured from the water pump top with a ruler (of course, you can't do that with a BB, but you can probably find a reference point, like the bottom of the valve cover). Sure enough, the hand-made mark was the right one compared to the 73. Almost 1.5 liter above the stamped 'Full' mark.

5 to 6 quarts seems nominal for a stock 383 pan (bigger pans : hemi is at 6, deep aftermarket units are at 7 and beyond).

With a new filter, I'd say pour in 6 quarts and make your own 'Full' mark.

mabey cause your 383 only needs 4 1/2 quarts of oil.

Well the service manual and owners manual both state 5 quarts with new filter. I still would like to know the lenght of the dipstick. I know the tube lenght matters, but I need to start somewhere. Since its easier to measure the dipstick thats where I'am at.
