Hey Guys,

I need to do a Heater Core bypass in my 1970 Super Bee 440 motor. As the heater hoses appear to be two sizes on this one (5/8" and 1/2"), do I just loop a small piece of the 5/8" over to the 1/2" fitting? (or is it vice-versa?).

Second question -- If I decide to bypass the heater permnanently by removing the 2 hose outlet fittings and replacing with plugs -- How hard is it to get off those fittings? I suspect they have been in there for years -- do these come out easily or are there tricks to doing this?

Just cut the hoses off and put plugs in them for the time being or go to NAPA and get caps for fittings.

Is it Ok to plug the hoses like that (doesn't coolant actively run through there and would backup due to pressure?). What kind of plugs did you use for this?

I can't recall whether when the heater hoses are removed if the fitting that is exposed is threaded or not? If so, then I guess a cap would work. If not, the whole fitting needs to come out right?

IF you waant it to look like a butcher job either:
A. loop the larger heater hose
B. cut and cap them

If you want to do it right:
heat the ends with a torch clamp on the vise grips and unscrew.
then get the proper plugs for a nice clean install.

What are the heating of the ends for? Also, this may be a dumb question .. but what is a torch clamp? I do have vise-grips....so at least I'm covered there

As for getting the proper plugs -- anyone know the right size I need to look for for a '70 440 motor?

You could just install a valve in one of the hoses--that will give you the option to shut if off when ever you want, or re-activate the heater. Thats what I did on mine, but I live in Washington where a heater is useful from time to time.

Can you tell me more about the valve you put in? In which hose (and where) did you install it? Do you have a picture of this setup? I would like to try this approach.

Anyone out there have an example of a Heater Hose Control Valve they are using to be able to selectively allow or disallow coolant to reach the heater core?

Is this generally done at the manifold or in-line on the heater hoses themselves?

The nipples are a huge pain to remove. A hand held torch will help some, vise grips and something solid inside the tube to prevent it from being crushed from the vise grips will usually do it.
The easier way is so use a new piece of 5/8 hose and clamp it tight with a worm clamp.
Yes you can squeeze it down on the 1/2 nipple and it will not leak..

It's usually mounted inline on the 5/8" heater hose and is either vacuum or cable controlled. Opened when you want hot coolant flowing through the heater core and closed when you don't.

Heater control valves were factory parts for a lot of vehicles. I think my 1976 Dodge truck still had a cable controlled flow valve in the heater hose. I bet you can get that part over the counter at any Dodge dealer.

On a 1970 Big Block motor, is it the 5/8" hose (one closest to the front of the motor) that flows "TO" the heater core and the 1/2" hose (one mounted behind the 5/8 as you are standing at the front of the car) that flows "FROM" the heater core?

Also, anyone know why Mopar would use two different sized hoses for this setup?
