Last weekend a 1966 Plymouth Hemi Sattilite with 11000 original miles came in the the shop for a complete do-over.Other than not being in the best storage atmosphere this car is perfect, untouched and still owned by the original owner with all the original documentation. It last seen any street driving in the early 70s and the engine was last fired up in 1990.The crazy thing is the owner lives 5 miles from BGR.We were in goose bumps all week as we disassemble the car.The engine was never touched and had the correct date coded bearings. The only addition to the car was a Sun tach that was installed 7 days after the purchase in March of 1966.The original certicard was still in place. Thanks to the owner who preserved this "Time Capsule"

Obiviously anything that has sat for 40 years and has not been started for 20 years and not stored in a climate controlled storage should and needs to be dissassembled and check and reassembled.A complete or partial paint is also needed. The gas alone was in a varnish jell state. As this car was purchased from a dealer 20 minutes for here in SW Pa. it was treated to the heavy factory under coat that is hardened and falling off exposing the perfect under pans. The wheelcylinders and bushings and anything else to make this car dependable and road worthy will be replaced as the owner,a older retired gentalman wants to once again enjoy this muscle car.Any and all the original parts that are to be replaced will be "tagged and bagged" for future refrence or "show and tell" by the owner.

I know I've never been accused of being a resto guy but wouldn't it be better if those items (like the wheel cylinders) that could be rebuilt should be.

I know it would be quicker/cheaper to just throw some after market parts on it but IMHO i think the car deserves better than that.

If that was mine and I owned it for all those years I would be and and I kid you not. I would be having a blast on the street with it living it up by taking out the newer cars and even blasting it down the 1/4 every now and them. But that's just me

I hope the owner has a blast with it

Bill, don't assume anything will be dicarded,I was using things as examples as to explain "do-over".As this will be a driver, certain up dates are in order.Jim has waited for many years for his dream to come true and he is at that junction in his life he is going to make it happen. He will direct this "do- over" to please himself. We certainly will advise him.

Absolutely,us "old timers"have to help each other out.Jim is fast becomming one of the regular"retirees" hanging out at BGR.We will be stocking the first aid kit with arthritis pills and Depends. We will also be in the drug business, selling all our Viagra tablets that we never use since we can't remember what they were prescibed for. Stiff knees and fingers hurt enough

That is a really cool deal, 5 miles from you? Were you aware of this car before? Maybe I'll get a chance to see that one.

Bob in the mid 80's I bought a 66 Coronet with 18000 miles on it. The one I owned had set many years because of a spun rod bearing. The interior still smelled new as it had been indoors all its life. A beautiful car and a once in a life time experience.

Be sure and take a lot of pictures, only repaint what you have to, I would save the engine paint, just clean everything up.

You should put him in touch with someone that knows a lot about survivor cars so they could advise him. Then he could make decisions accordingly. I know I made some mistakes on my Coronet, just because I did not know any better. There are somethings that are better left undone on that type of auto that will not effect the use of it at all but will make a huge difference in the collect-ability and value in the future.

I know it's his car and he can do what ever he wants with it. I would just hate to see him do something to the car that would hurt its value or market-ability, that he possibly might not do to the car if he was aware. It's a special car and needs special care. I am sure you are more than capable of providing what the car deserves. I am just of the mind that the survivor stadias of the car should be preserved if possible.

It's crazy how one of these old cars can give an old fart the same kind of enjoyment a child has unwrapping a Christmas present.

Getting old just means you were smarter than some and luckier than others.

He is in good hands at BGR.I have ownd many 66 Hemi Satillites.Debby first car I purchased for her daily driver was a silver Hemi Satilite and I had a Regal Poly Irid one as well as a red one.Debby's was a 2500 mile car that I purchased for $700 in 1971,The red one was from New Mexico with less than 15000 miles that I sold for $1500 and I believe it is still in the local area.

Jims car was one of 3 sold at Bridgeville Sales in 1966.The other two, one red 4-speed and one yellow automatic.Joe Mizia knows the details on those two.Jim flew under the radar until recently he has achieved celebrity status.
