How much does it cost to get a 440 crank cut to 400 main journal size and get the rod journals offset ground to 2.2" AND get the counterweights cut down? Cheaper than a new crank?

I doubt you could have all that done to a used crankshaft, and be cheaper then a new Eagle crank...

IIRC it was $200 to turn my Eagle crank down on the mains, and have the counterweights machined, but that was 7 years ago.

grinding your own crank is probobly a little cheaper....... UNTIL... you offset grind the rod journals. At that point, I'd be calling 440-source or (insert your choice here).

You'll have to get quotes to find out which is less expensive today. It used to be cheaper to rework a stock crank but then the Chinese forgings changed that picture. But in the last 6 months the dollar has dropped, steel prices have doubled and the cost of shipping has gone way up. So in the near future new cranks are going to be twice as expensive as they were last year.

The era of cheap cranks is probably over in the near future. I'm expecting pretty big price increases to hit soon.

Of course, when you have your own crank ground, you'll diminish the likelihood of finding out that you'll have to get new bearings with a WIDER #3, as well as smaller diameter (had a taper issue corrected) because the thrust surfaces are OUT OF SPEC!

Makes for a pretty expensive 'budget' installation... the first set of bearings got started with the knife going for clearance (then found out there was .0015" taper starting from the edge of the oil hole), and a second set .010" under with .010" wider thrust.

The best part: I started mocking up the rods a week or so ago, and found that there's .021" (yup, .004" over the factory maximum spec) of side-clearance on the first set of rods I checked - and that's with the edges of the bearings rubbing on the crank radius. Wonder if the rods will be able to move farther apart after I chamfer the bearings?

Not trying to tell anyone not to buy the chinese stuff, but just want to throw a 'heads up' out there that these parts that are s'posed to be "drop in" don't always work out that way.

I did the crank for my 471 in 2002/2003, so the pricing is a bit dated. As already stated, the chinese forgings now make it tough to justify doing your own.

Cost me about $750 to have the counterweights turned, the mains reduced and the rods offset ground, plus a competion balance. Machinist took more off the counterweights than needed, and it ended up costing me a few extra slugs of mallory metal in the end.

413 Crank core cost me about $100, but it was part of a package deal.

I've got another 400 block and RB crank at my disposal, so I have been considering pricing out another stroker motor for my next yet to be determined project. I might swing past the machine shop and get a quote for another offset grind.
