I am replacing the leaf springs on my 57 Belvedere. What have you guys done about the fabric wrap around the springs where they meet the rear axle? Is there a good substitute, or can it be omitted? It is not even shown in the FSM diagram. Thanks!

I've added a couple of leaves to my 68 road runner and I didn't use anything between them. So far I haven't had any ill effects. I know the fabric you are talking about. The 65 Fury I had used the same stuff. I guess it was to keep down squeaks and/or to keep the leaves from wearing into each other. I don't have a clue what it is or where you'd find it. I know later they used plastic between the leaves. Good luck!

Wow! Maybe I didn't know what he was talking about after all! My Fury had little fabric "pads" between the leaves and that's what I assumed he meant. I didn't know they used to completely wrap them like that. Thanks for the pic! You learn a lot on this site.

I believe the springs were rapped for both quietness and to keep dirt out. Dirt between the springs is like sand paper. They probably stopped using it because of cost and dirt and water would still get in them eventually. I don't believe they are necessary. If it were a top notch resto, then I would wrap them.

Thanks for the replies. On mine, it is a thin, white, canvas-like material, and it is only wrapped around the springs where they bolt to the rear axle. My thinking was that it was to eliminate any noise, and I'll probably be fine without it. Thanks again.
