This weekend I tore off the old seat covers for the rear seats of 70 challenger. Inside appears to be some very thin wires that connect to a rope-type material. These were pretty fragile and broke apart.

Is there any replacedments for these. wether or not, any home-made alternatives, or will it be okay to recover the seats without them?

They're called listing wires. I think legendary will redo them if you get the seats done there. I'm not sure if they'll just do that part for you (if you're doing your seats yourself). Call them and see what they say.

One of the Mopar magazines did an article on upholstery and said they used piano wire of the same gauge.

I went to a mattress company in the area and bought some. (Verlo)
They are used in some matress construction.
If you want original you'll need to weave the wire through the burlap.
