Got a friend here in Phoenix, who is amazing with fiberglass, he runs a chop-top 61 falcon Wagon, and the only part that is steel is the roof..made all the F-glass quarters, doors, bumpers, front-end himself. couple of years ago he experimented with the cheap style CF, and dropped the weight of his hood from 20 to 11 lbs...so I'm confused when I hear you say the weight savings is minimal??

He made the hood, and sculpted the hoodscoop on for my Challenger's Unlimited frontend...far lighter and stiffer than the unlimited piece.

believe me, it cant be shimmed.

I`ve fixed those types of problems before.
Take it off and put some heat to it.
I use a propane torch, when its hot enough it starts to smell and smoke, hold it in the correct position till COOL.
May take several tries and may have to go past square and let it return after cooling.
May need repainted when done tho,It MAY blister the gel-coat and or paint.
I`ve fixed hoods, scoops, and even doors this way.
Never had one go back later once its fixed.

i wouldnt say i am up on it...
but a hood for my car ..with real c/f process
is a grand..he quoted/threw out when i asked him.
thats why i dont have one...

...I'd pay a grand for a C/F 62 dart hood with a tall M/W scoop, if it would bolt to stock hinges & work with light springs. The next problem would be shipping cost/damage. fwiw.

Not sure if the first problem is the grand, the 62 dart, the MW scoop, stock hinges or light springs. Shipping cost/damage is pretty far behind IMO

And I'll have what your having

... AFTER I posted that ... I felt it was a low figure. So now in 2010 ... 4k? ... for what ? ... a weight savings of 4 or so pounds over good-race-quality regular poly-resin FG

OPEN yerr wallet !

Oh ...I have NEVER done any CF work ..... and never will. iN addition to all the NEGS that have been said above ..... it is also famous for uNlaminating.

WonderFULL ....

Did you read his post??? AAR is by far NOT the best, and quite possibly the worst producer I have seen
As far as Carbon Fiber is concerned another major issue with it is that it is not as forgiving (doesn't flex as much before it breaks) as 'Glass and is harder to repair.

bottom line:
A-C F is nearly impossible to find
B-it's not worth the extra cost per pound saved
C-the extra weight saving over good race weight glass is minimal at best
D- servicability questionable

Not in my plans

Although it seems to me that CF is definitely "straighter" when it comes to body lines and looks much more like the OEM stamped steel panels. I know good FG doesn't have this problem as much but I hate that "wavy" look you can see on vehicles with run of the mill FG..

Doc...for you to have "fiberglass" in your handle, you don't seem to up on current composites. A full body, for a pro-mod type car these days, made of glass, high quality glass, is still nearly 300 pounds. A high quality Carbon body, for that same car, from Hairy, McAmis or any of the other top composite shops, will weigh about 70lbs and cost you 8500-10,000. That is a "complete" body.

As for what parts weigh. The hood on our drag radial Buick, is a nice piece, from Glastek, weighs about 25lbs. The entire carbon front end, with the titanium tree, on the pro-mod car, weighs 12 lbs.

Carbon Fiber, is also much more durable and more flexible that regular fiberglass. I have a sheet I bought from McAmis, to make some door panels and gauge panels. You can fold the stuff double and it does not crack.

I have a flat sheet of carbon fiber that we used as a hood. it cracked and no one can tell me how to repair it. It is just a flat sheet with strip of styrofoam laid onto it for support , It cracked at those supports

I'll be honest in that I only searched for a repair cement or glue . That search I found nothing specifically for CF maybe some general adheasive but non specific
