I have the 1.4 fluid tip on this. I swear I just dont seem to be able to get it to spray a wet enough pattern. The instrucions say 23psi. But I cant hardly get it it to shoot PRIMER much at all unless I turn up the pressure some. I never intended to shoot paint with this gun, but I have a feeling the 1.4 size tip is too small. I have heard of others using a larger size tip for primering a car. 1.8, 2.1 larger whatever???? Your input??

i use the 1.4 tip for primer with no problem, you may not have your primer thin enough or your air/paint ratio adjusted correctly.ive had that prob before and just kept playing with the consistancy and a/p ratios till it started flowwing smooth and wet.on another note since i switched to the HVLP guns its much easier.

Maybe I missed something here. What kind of reducer are you using? UltaSystem by Shewinn Williams is good. 23 to 30 psi should be fine if it is reduced right. Oh, and don't over do it with the hardner, too much and it will dry before it hits. Make sure the metal is cool too.

Get a scap piece of wood to see how the pattern is. Might be too wide and keep about 12-15 inches away from the work. Stay consistant with how far you keep the gun from the work area.

EDIT: I agree with Bonefish. HVLP is the way to go.

Most of the high build primers spray better with a 1.8 or larger tip.

ok well all the devilbliss hvlp and non hvlp's that i have at work have tips like 93p or 068 my sata at home has a 1.4 and i woudl never never put primer in it on the tip is too small you should have a gun thats just for primer as you said this one is for yes you can over reduce the primer but that breaks it down and makes it not work as good. and why shriwin williams? guess if your going cheap your better off with a ppg product or RM product but to go cheaper omni by ppg has a primer that you use out of the can mp281 i think is the new number and you jsut reduce it with lac thinner. but yes the 1.4 tip is way to small to spray primer for whats its intended to do. which is help level imperfections. my experence is i been in body and paint for over 10 years and now i work at christensen shipyard as a painter painting 30 mill. dollar yachts.

I have a Finishline gun and have used a 1.8 tip to spray primer with good results.

FWIW, My Finish Line HVLP gun kit from Eastwoods came with a 1.4 and a 1.8 tip. Instructions stated the 1.8 was recommended for primers and the 1.4 for color and clear coats.

I think Im going to purchase the 1.8MM tip. The smaller tip wants to clog when used for any length of time, and I swear I just cant get it to shoot wet enough for me. Like I noted B/4. Im only using the gun for primering purposes.

Yes, PPG is top notch. Didn't mean to get on anybodies bad side...... Sherwin Williams has always been good for me and I'm sure other people have used it without any problems.

ppg is ok , here at my body shop we use sikkens auto wave .. all waterborn paint now , much better color matching also their primer is way better ,, now with the finishline guns you have to use a 1.8 for any primer or you will be blocking more then you need to . if i was you i wouldnt use the finshline gun i would buy a sharpe razor 1.8 much better gun and if you ever want to spray single stage , that gun will lay it down like glass .
