Picking up a '71 truck 360 tomarrow with the 2.02/1.60 valve heads, Thermobog, ect. Runs really well. Just wondering what the compression might be and what the general consensus of this motor might be.

Anyone who built a strong running 360 out of a stockish block feel free to share stories and specs. Im hoping this thing can get me high 12s or low 13s after I cut the heads, change the cam, put headers on it, converter, good gears, etc.

Stock compression is very low,KB 107 pistons are a very nice choice. Mild cam 230-240 @.050 approx .500 lift,headers,LD340 or RPM airgap manifold, holley carb 650-750 DP,3500 or more converter,4.10ish gearing and it's just no big deal to run high 11's to low12's in an Abody. I'll assume the heads have had 2.02 intake valves installed? They left the factory with 1.88 intake valves.Find someone good to do a quality valve job and bowl porting. In a truck at 3800lbs you could possibly run high 12's.

Alright. I havent run the numbers on the block itself yet but the castings for the heads are the ones with the 2.02 valves. Suspriciously though the block (and everything else) are painted orange (like the 340s were) and its the ONLY coat of paint on the block.

Also has a four barrel thermoquad intake and everything on it. Sure hope I dont get gipped and wind up with a 340.

Yes the casting numbers are the same 340 or 360. The 1.88 intake valve isn't a big problem and who knows maybe someone put some 340 heads on a 360,no big deal. Look at the block, the year and cid should be on it.

Are you assuming this is the original motor? What's the engine code?

The '71 360 only came one way, 2bbl, single exh, low compression, small cam, 915 heads with 1.88 int valve (915 heads only had 2.02 if they were on a '70-'71 340), paint should be blue.

Maybe you have something better than original.

340/360 used the same head castings after the 360's were introduced. That is like saying that 'my 383 has 440 heads'. The earlier 340 X head casting wasn't that much different that it would make a difference. the 2.02 valves will not be a help unless you are spinning in excess of 6000, in fact the 1.88 valve heads may in fact have better low end.

?? Maybe I didn't make my point very clearly,it was late. If he found the heads to be 915's they could have either intake valve,it really doesnt mater much IMO.

Well it seems that this engine has been rebuilt because the block is from 1985. Has the 915 heads on it though. Any idea on what the compression should be on a stock '85 four barrel 360?

Low, very low like all 360's. If it truly 8 to 1 your lucky.

Very true. Early 915's could be either. Either way on a 360 make sure to get rid of the rotaotrs on the exhaust valves and install regular length valve springs and retainers.
