My wife calls me at 6:30 this AM on her way to work at the hospital and sayes her speedometer isn't working, the car (2001 Chrysler Sebring 'vert) isn't shifting,,,,from her explaination it may shift from 1st to 2nd but that's it, and the check engine light is on. Where do I start looking?

Output speed sensor. It drives the speedo and is the source for vehicle speed info for the computer to determine shift points. Car goes into limp-in mode, 1-2 shift only, until fixed.

You'll find two sensors on the transmission. One of them is bad. Had this happen to me. It was a PITB to get to them but it WILL fix your problem.

Where is the output speed sensor located on the transmission? Any special tools needed?

go to the dealer and buy an ouput and input speed sensor.(about$20-$25 each)15/16 or 1 inch deep socket, unscrew right out.plastic sensor, look indetical from the outside.outside of transmission facing the front.2 wire plug on each sensor.plug is different as is the internal shape of the sensor,so pay attention, which went were.

Just checked with Auto Zone, they have a speed sensor for $39.00, they didn't have anything "output" or "input" speed sensor, just a speed sensor. Sounds like I better wait and talk to the dealer parts department monday. Still wondering where to look on the transmission for this.

Daughter's 96 Neon was shifting funny, noticed when it did the speedo was all over the place, checked the sensor, it was loose, and greasy.

Unhooked it, and cleaned it, no trouble since, 2 years ago.

It was on the back side of the tranny on her Neon, if I recall correctly. If it was here, I'd take a picture and make sure where it was.

Speed sensor is located on front of trans,by the cooler lines, the one closest the engine is the input, output is closest drivers wheel, thats the one you need, get a chrysler one cheaper&better.

Thanks for the replys! $21.00 later and the car's fixed. Initially I had $$$ going through my head thinking I was going to have to send the car to the shop to have the tranny torn down.

When she comes home and says "I saved 50 bucks at the store!", just smile and remember how much YOU saved on a tow, diagnosis and repair (not to mention being without a car).
I'd suggest doing this with your INSIDE voice....
