One chart I read says 195/70-14.
I don't want it to look ridiculous, but I'd like to get a good-fitting tire that is wide but not so wide as to be unsightly or out-of-spec.
Ideas?

I think a 205/70-14 would be closer to the E70-14.
Drilling down through specs for representative tires on sites like tirerack.com and performanceplustire.com shows that the O.D. of the E70-14 is about 25.7" with a section width (sidewall to sidewall) of about 8.
195/70-14 is only 24.8" O.D. and section widths in the area of 7.9 and 8.0
205/70-14 is 25.4" O.D. and section width of about 8.
Not seeing choices in 215/70-14.
