Hello All,

The fender tag on my buddy's 440 Bee says it has an 18-spline 4-speed transmission. But, we suspect the tranny has been changed at some point and is not the original one.

How can you tell whether it has an 18 or 23 spline tranny now? (I read those were the only two options and that the 18 was put in the 440 cars generally).

Thanks!

for the first part of your statement/question, you are going to either pull it and count the splines or try to match the numbers on the side.

the 23 spline trans was the common trans on 440 cars,,,the 18 spline units were found behind 6 pac and HEMI cars. I imagine they could of been a option or part of a option in the Trac Pac or Super Trac Pac cars

The fendertag will only tell you it is a 4-speed not a 18 or 23 spline.
All 440 & 426 cars had 18 spline A833's and 383 and less cid had 23 splines.
The only true way to tell is to count the teeth inside the box or count the splines on the input shaft by looking up through the bellhousing inspection cover area. I believe there were some casting numbers for the 18 spline that were tailshaft specific but so many cars get changed over the years, I am sure someone will chime in.

Ok , first off 440 BEE ??? What year is the car ?

440-4 speed cars beginning in I "think" 67 got 18 spline Heavty Duty , HEMI, 4 speed.

That said as stated above unless you can match the VIN on the side of the trans to a known 440, 440-6 or HEMI car the way to tell with the trans on the engine, assuming the trans has not had major castings mixed and matched , is by checking the casting number on the tailshaft , but this only holds true for 68-69 model year transmissions. 66-67 HEMI 4 speeds (did they make them in 66 ???) used the 307 bearing both front and rear , and in 1970 the B/E 833 that went behind the 383 got the 308 bearings so that trans will have the same tailshaft casting number as the HEMI box .

confused yet ? I am ....

As John has stated before the casting numbers are of little use in most cases. Add to it the fact that many of these tranny's are pieced together from parts over the years and they are even less useful.

If you can take the inspection cover off of the bell housing you may be able to see the tubular shaft the throwout bearing rides on. If you can then the 18 spline shaft is larger then the 23 spline shaft so the tube (part of the front bearing retainer) is larger also. I don't have numbers with me but I can get them when I get home tonight.

If you can't see it then the only option is to slide the tranny back far enough to see it if you want to be absolutely sure.

Pull the steel pan on the bottom of the bellhousing and you might be able to see enough of the spline to determine which one you have.
