I bought a set of newly rebuilt 915 heads off eBay many years back and hadn't gotten around to them until now.
I just measured the exhaust valves and found they are 1.60" !
I thought all 915's were the onetime castings used in the '67 HP 440's and had the 1.74" exhaust valves ?
I guess I'll have my machinist install the bigger valves.
Despite the smaller exhaust valves that came with these heads, are the ports still the better flowing ones ?

Thanks in advance.

I had a set of 160 ex 915's, they are out there, pretty common. I had the seats opened up to 181's and I believe the port configuration to be same as 906's.

They have the good ports, i have a set on my near stock 383 68RR , i just did bowl work left the stock 160's in and had all the valves backcut, thats what my engine builder recomended for a stock 383 he said their would be very little difference in going bigger, but in my opinion if you are going to build even a mild performance motor i would at least go with a set of 1.74

The hp stamped 915 heads had the large valves no hp stamp had the small ones, same head otherwise...

Really, I thought that there were three 915 heads out there if you will. The small exhaust valve and the big exhaust valve heads and then there were HP's and of course those had the big valves?

There are 3 versions on the 915 "J" heads in the smal block world.

Big intake 2.02
Small inake 1.88

And then the T/A heads with the big intakes with the off-sets pushrods.

It was the second. The '63 383-343hp 2x4bbl motor used a 1.74 exh valve. I think the '62-'64 300 letter cars also used a 1.74 exh.

There were more 1.60 exh 915s than there were 1.74. I've had two pair over the years.

Interesting, I think some leftover small valve BB 915s made it to some 68 models..Think the smallblock 915 was 69/70 or around there...

The SB 915 first appeared in '70 on 340-4 and 340-6.

All these mopar books and magazines refer to the 915 heads as the high performance head back in in 1967. Of course this leads one to believe there was only one variant with the larger exh. valve.
No one ever mentioned there were 915 heads with the 1.60" valve. These were probably used in land barges with 440 low performance engines.
