The speedo in may 1972 Coronet is not working. I've tried a few things and can't seem to find the problem. Here's what I've done so far, maybe someone has an idea for me?

1. I removed the cable at the gauge and drove the car with the end out where I could see it. The end of the cable was not rotating so that means it's a problem at the trans.

2. Removed the cable from the trans and it rotates fine by hand.

3. Pulled the speedo gear, no teeth missing.

4. I thought maybe I had rotated the speedo gear away from the gear it mates to in the tail shaft. So I reinstalled it and rotated it to where I felt it should mess. Hooked the cable back up and drove it. Still doesn't work.

Any ideas?

With the speedo disconnected push the cable in the housing as far as you can and see if it turns. You may have let it come out of the gear when you disconneted it. If it won't turn then you know it's in the gear right. If it spins then the trouble is in the gear like the cable or gear stripped. If the cable works ok then try sticking one of those little give away screwdrivers into the speedo where the cable hooks up and see if you can spin it enough to make the needle move. Have fun.

The speedo worked before I did the engine swap. The speedo and cable are the same, but the transmision is different.
