I am working on a never ending project(aren't we all). I have the engine compartment ready for primer and eventually it will be painted the same color as the car. It's looking like that could be a year or so away. What is the best kind of primer to use on something that will sit for a long time?? I've heard that bare metal can rust under sandable primer. Also where can I buy it? Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Most will tell you to use an epoxy primer

Epoxy primer is good for that. You have to be aware than some manufactures (ppg) recommend that you scuff and reapply an additional coat if you let it sit for more than a week before topcoating with your surfacing primers.

I did the bottom of my dart with ppg dp epoxy and am now having to scotch brite the bottom of the car before we can move on to the next step.

If you are down to bare metal then use the two part self-etching primer. Adheres great to bare and will still be there a year from now as long as it is applied right. Dupont makes it and it has been around for years. I used it on truck frames and 5 years later the paint would be chipped but the primer was still in place and clean. Not sure if the numbers are still the same but 617S and 618S seem to be right. Not positive though. It was a light biege color.
