Have you painted one before? What type of paint did you use? Its not scratched bad its just dull from someone cleaning it with something abrasive .Andy

I'd try wet sanding & polishing 1st... much like a paint finish. Use the finest # paper you can get out the scratches with, followed by polishing compound.
Best bet is to try a small area first to see what works.

Yup, what Rick said. Make sure you have several hours to dedicate to this project as it will take longer than you might think and use muscles that you never knew you had.

It would likely be easier and quicker to paint the wheel. Base coat / Clear coat is the way to go.

I'm betting if you look real close where the spokes meet the rim and where the spokes meet the hub you'll find some cracks. I haven't seen a 30+ year old wheel thats uncracked but if that's all it has after this many years you've got one of the good ones ... and there aren't too many of them.

LOL Andy ... ah yes, the beer to time ratio. Always an important factor and one that hasn't been documented accurately in the car hobby. Kind of a do - it- yourself shop rate. LOL

Make sure you post some pictures of the finished product (and let us know the quantity of refreshments consumed).

By the way, here is what your hand will look and feel like after you finish polishing the wheel. LOL

On a serious note, it would likely be easier to polish the wheel if it was still attached to the steering column. That way you can get more leverage because it will be solidly mounted and won't be so hard to hold still.

Thanks for the advise and the warnings . I might wear gloves after I saw your hand demo , besides I will get a better grip on the bottle oops I meant the wheel . I suppose MOLSEN would be a good choice of beverage in your parts I see it every once in a while here (I like). Andy

My pleasure Andy !

Yes Molson cAnAdIaN is the absolute best beer to partake of when working on steering wheels.

Just remember ... DO NOT buff the wheel with the beer or drink the polish ...

Carry on

NOt to Hijack the thread, but I am getting ready to paint a steering wheel and was wondering the best way to mount/hang it while painting to get a good consistent coat and no hanger marks. I though about mounting it on the spline of an old steering column and shooting it that way or building a fixture using a cut-off spline that would allow me to mount and rotate the wheel. Any tips from the experts on best way to do this?

Thanks

Hundreds of seconds and thousands of pennies went into the design and construction of this high tech unit. I think after 18 years I got my moneys worth out of it.

Excellent, Thanks for the pic. That is very similar to what I was envisioning with my fixture.

There ya go Ken! Most often the simplest solution is elegant and practical.
