Another thing to check is the beer barrel intake. Underneath they use a piece of sheetmetal to seal it off. They blow the gasket all the time. I replaced mine with a piece from Indy and cured a lot of those type of problems. A sure indication is that it will start burning a little oil.

Thanks!
I'll check that out also when I put the sensor on it.

Lowest price on the sensor that I found is at O'Reilly's for $50. P/N is CSS813 for automatics, CSS812 for manuals (they cost more, $120).

Let me know if that solves the problem on your truck.

I know it's a different year but my 2002 Ram 1500 with 360/Auto use to do the same thing. Would ramdomly start misfiring/popping thru the intake while driving. Almost like it was running on 6 or 7 cylinders. Then it would return to normal like nothing ever happened. The check engine light would come on but would be gone bu the time I got to the dealer. After several trips to the dealer they finally found the problem. It was a sensor located on the rear axle!? Go figure Been fine ever since though!

Wow, again this sounds just like my truck.
Anymore info on what kind of sensor it is?

ABS speed sensor reads the ring gear.

OK, this is getting too wierd. A week before this engine problem appeared, the ABS and BRAKE warning lights came on on my truck. They went back out later the same day and are NOT on now.

The only sensor on the rear axle that I know of is the ABS sensor on the differential.

HOW does an ABS fault cause the engine to run poorly, misfire, etc???? I thought they were totally different systems.

Rear wheel speed is read by ABS module...It passes the info. to the PCM and is used for vehicle speed and odometer. Fuel shut off occurs at 118 mph. If a erroneous reading is received by the PCM it WILL shut off injector pulse width.

Good luck

I hear ya MoparsnMissiles. It was all too weird for me to figure out but the dealer eventually did. It was 4 years and 167,000 miles ago that this happened, but I'm almost positive it was the ABS you mentioned and it most definitely made it run like crap. Since the repair it has never done it again, and I have over 267,000 miles on it now. Untouched motor and trans. Best truck I have ever owned bar none!

Well, I replaced the crank sensor and so far so good.
But the problem was intermittent before so time will tell.
I am driving the truck more than usual to see if the old problem reoccurs.
I'll back in a few days.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!!
