I’m hoping someone here can help me.
I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 pick up, 5.9 auto with 200,000 mi. on it.

Recently it has had a tranny rebuilt and the heads redone. The injectors were also cleaned.
It runs like a top most of time. . . . most of time.

Sometimes when I’m driving it, it starts to spit and buck. You can’t accelerate cause it
just pops and has no power.
If I pull over into a parking lot and put it in neutral and rev the heck out of it finally quits
bogging, does a few pops and then acts like nothing ever went wrong.
No lights on the dash ever come on.

It started to do this before I have the heads done along with new ox sensors.

Any ideas?
It’s getting harder and harder to trust the truck.

Does the cat converter rattle,or possibly plugging up?

Had that problem with my 2001. Crank sensor fixed it right up.

his has 200k should have done it. my 2000 and 2001 went at 88k and 95k, still remember that cause both times were in snow storms and plows on,fixed both in lot. if you have a scanner crank sensors mostly fail when trucks hot magnet in sensor has crack and opens up, they radical missfire scanner will show it. truck cools down to ambient temp will run fine till it opens up again with full temp.if not done give it a shot 2 10 mm bolts hold it in by bell flange behind pass head. sucks cause they sieze in from heat

I'd suspect the fuel pump is getting tired. My 5.2 Dak would start missing, usually when 1/4 tank or less. Eventually started missing so badly under load you could not drive it. No warning lights tripped on the dash. Replaced the fuel pump and the problem was gone.

The cat doesn't rattle at all. All the miles on the truck are highway miles.
Is there a way to test for a bad cat?

Also, the cap/rotor and wires were replaced less than 1,000 miles ago.
It was all done when the head were placed.

Thanks for the replys so far!!

Go Fish,
Did it run good for a long time and then start to miss and sputter and then clear back up for a long time before doing it again?

Also, to all the guys suggesting the crank sensor.
I tihnk I'll go ahead and change that.
If I recall, they are not that expensive.
I hate to keep throwing money into it cause I've already spent so much $ on it.
It been a great truck up to this point.

Thanks again for the suggestions! Mopars coming through again!

Dustya440- You said the dash lights didn't come on?
I have a '99 Ram, 5.9. I was pulling a car, ran fine. Pulled into a rest area. When I took off, all of the sudden it started doing this, same thing. The check engine light came on and stayed on. Got it nursed back home and hooked up a scanner, yup, the crank sensor. Yeah, they are relatively cheap but a PITA to get too. Just wondering if it is the crank sensor, why the light didn't come on

That's what I was wondering. Why no lights.
Once before the check engine did come on and it was scanned. It showed a bad ox sensor.

So it was replaced but the truck still does the same thing only no light now.

I just changed the crank position sensor on my '99 Ram 5.2...
The hex part of the 2 fastening bolts is 13mm.
What will save you aggravation, is knowing that they also have a 1/4" allen socket in the center of the bolt head. Once you break them loose (I used a 1/4" drive rachet), a regular allen wrench gives you a nice clean access to 'em. There's not enough room for the socket to back them out (at least there was stupid tight clearances ). If they're not too tight, you could probably start out with the allen wrench.
The bolts & sensor are on the passenger side bellhousing behind the cylinder head by the trans dipstick tube.

Rick

The light is just warning device. If the subject sensor / circuit stays within it's designed operating parameters. The light will not come on by design.
Crank sensors operate in a .5 to 4.5 volt range .
IF it goes above or below this voltage scale it's sets a fault and turns on the mil light. It could still have an issue , just not enough to illuminate the mil light.

I personally have never had a crank senser cause a rough idle issue.

Hope you didn't replace the O2 sensor with a Bosch...they don't work well in Mopars. NGK made the factory originals and work much better...http://www.sparkplugs.com/more_info.asp?AAIA=1361955&pid=17785

My 2001 Ram (360) just started doing this exact same thing yesterday. Running just fine, then when stopping at intersection, the truck won't idle worth a crap. Then you can't get it to move again because no power, can't get engine speed up, backfiring like timing is off, engine just seems to be choking itself.

If I shut it down and restart, it seems to run fine again..... for awhile.

Also, no Check Engine lamp (MIL) and no code set on dash display. (Key ON/OFF three times quickly)

Yup, generally when the crank sensor goes the motor just quits running. I've had intermittent starting issues with the "cam" sensor in the dist due to heat soak and age, but no rough running.

Yes, the problem was intermittant for many months. It would run normal with a full tank. If the gas went below 1/4 tank, it would start missing. Towards the very end it didn't matter if the tank was full or not, still would idle but bad missing under any load.

In responce to MoparsnMissiles:
Sounds just like what my truck does!
I just ordered the sensor.
Hopefully, this is the problem.

Yeah, my manual says that if the PCM does not see an output from the crank sensor within 3 seconds of starting the engine, it shuts the fuel system down. So this case would be a completely dead sensor.

Doesn't say anything about what happens with intermittent output or low output of the sensor.
