So I answered a guy on another forum that the 727 transmission should be warmed to operating temperature, the shifter put momentarily in each gear, then the gear selector left in neutral at idle while checking the transmission fluid.

I have a feeling a few of them don't believe me....

I was always under the impression the 727 needed to be in neutral because of reduced line pressure in park, the converter doesn't "fill" in park or something...

Is there a technical explanation a layman can understand, or am I cuckoo?

(Don't answer that! )

that is correct. for the "why" I had read that fluid is being pumped in neutral & that's when it needs to be checked which I always thought was strange as it's the opposite of when you check eng oil & as far as your sanity is concerned I am not qualified to comment on that.

yes check in neutrel the pump is pumping fluid anytime the engine is running however with the manual vavle in park the fluid is not being circulated unless you have installed an aftermarket manual vavle like comes in a transgo shift kit at that piont you can check it in park

Your converter will leak trans fluid back into the trans. In neutral, with the pump pumping you know the converter is full
