Got a 318. Have KB pistons that are lighter than stock. Also have Eagle SIR rods that are lighter. All together 1 whole piston, pin, keeper and rod weigh 237 grams less than the TRW 318 piston, pin and rod. This will be rebalenced with the cranks counterweight being lighted to match. So what is the safe limit for a cast crank? And humor me, I dont want a 340 or 360, a teen is a very good engine. DaveJ

late 60's the 318 switched from forged to cast.
numerous guys running 550-600 HP w/cast 360 cranks, (think of the number of W2 headed 360's that have run over the years) the 318 has similar if not more journal overlap, so I'd say it should handle similar power levels.

Ive been running 7800 RPM on my stock 360 crank for 8 years. Its a standard crank, Eagle H-beam rods, KB pistons, and the bottom end balanced. I recently pulled the motor apart to change the pistons when I added the Eddy heads, and inspected the bearings. They looked brand new. Plastigaged right on, and 80 psi cold, 55 hot at idle.

I was thinking 71 was the last year for a forged crank in a 318

why not use a 273 forged crank? they are already set up for a lighter piston.
FOr a stick car the 273 crank is a good choice but if you have an auto cart the torque convertor hole is smaller then later la engines.

I have a 273 forged crank but they are not set up for light pistons. The small 273 piston is light but the piston pin is a huge hunk of steel. Ma Mopar used a Poly 318 crank to build the 273 but dident want to have to spend $$$ to rebalence it so they added weigh to the piston by making the pin so heavy, to equal a Poly 318's piston weight.
The block is a 78. Eagle SIR rods, not stock. We have done the drilling of the oil passages out, 1/2 inch for all the big ones to include the #5 main and oil pump, and 9/32 for the small ones from the mains to the lifter galery only. Will use a 8 qt pan with only 5 qts. Oil filter adapter PLATE has 4 more holes drilled inbetween. Windage tray with a small oil scraper. Oil cooler with 10 inch fan. Many more mods too. We were figuring around 450 HP. DaveJ
