Two years ago I completely rebuilt the front suspension on my 74 roadrunner and since it has had a popping sound that is somewhere in the frontend. it doesn't do it all the time like a constant everytime the suspension moves but just every once and a while driving on a relativly smooth road it will make that noise. does anyone have suggestions? Everything is new except the torsion bars could that be the problem? Thanks

Rubber or poly bushings? I'll bet on poly.

Something has to be loose somewhere in the front end for it to be popping.

A buddy of mines car was popping in the r/f when he applied the brakes. He swore he had looked at everything and couldn't find anything. As soon as I jacked it up with the floor jack I could see where the r/s rear upper controll arm bushing sleeve was moving in the UCA.

Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

Actually it was a stock rebuild so I went with rubber. Thanks I will check the UCA bushings and also the other bolted connections.

Check your A-Arm Bolts. I left one loose after my build and it was doing the same thing.

Well most of the noise disappeared when I tightened the UCA bolts btw what is the torque spec on the nuts that hold the UCA on the piviot bar? I have never replaced the bushings between the K frame and the front subframe as far as I know they are not even being reproduced. Mine look fine though and have very few dry cracks in them.

the fact that they have any dry cracks in them means they need to be replaced , you can get a solid spacer to replace the bushing . have you actually gone to the auto parts store and ASKED for them ? i would be surprised if they aren't still available .

oh and get a factory service manual while you are at it , they are invaluable

Burred-up or dry torsion bar ends can cause that also, though it's usually more of a 'pop' and a 'ping' sound at the same time.

try lubricating the pivot point of the strut rod at the lower control arm.

Have you noticed if it happens most of the time when you are applying the brakes? Or just regular driving that involves suspension travel?

That's a definite possibility. My blue car started doing that in the mid-70's, especially when driving over a rise & then coming back down. The service manager @ the C-P dealer told me to blow some graphite into that point & that took care of it.

well I laid under the front of the car today and basicly bench pressed the front end up off the suspension and bounced it around, the sound really sounds like its coming from the front torsion bar area. I am still going to lubricate the strut rod mounts but does anyone know what I can do in the torsion bar area? Should I support the car and back off the adjuster and lubricate the area and then run the adjuster back up to set the ride height?

My '70 service manual doesn't have anything about how to lubricate a torsion bar when it's assembled. Just says to coat both hex ends with lubricant #2525035 after inserting it through rear anchor. That's just regular wheel grease as I recall. I don't think lubricating where the adjustment bolt 'rides' would do much but you could give it a shot.

the torsion bars and hex sockets are greased from the factory. if that wasn't done during a rebuild the only way to correct it is taking the bars out and greasing them. i've had popping issues before. in my case it was the the strut rod pivot point at the lower control arm. i didn't lube that point when i rebuilt the front ends on both my coronets. if i had it to do over i would use some type of anti-sieze lube on that pivot point. i've had fairly good luck using Rust-Check spray lube on squeaky-popping front ends.
