Finally bit the bullet last Friday and drove the '68RR to work in Houston in the 95+deg temps. The car ran fine on the ride in at 0645 (no traffic) and on the ride home at lunch (moderate traffic / stop-n-go) with the temperature gauge sitting right around 180deg the entire time.

However when I pulled into the garage and let the car sit for 10-15 minutes it started to blow coolant out of the overflow tube. 5 minutes later most of the coolant was in a puddle under the car.

My question is this.......it didn't appear to me that the car was overheating based on the temperature gauge (brand new electric AutoMeter) so what could the issue be?

Do I need to add some sort of coolant recovery system or catch can? If so can someone recommend a kit?

I'm running a stock 440/6 in the car.

Yoou experience exactly the reason recovery tanks were instituted. It is called heat soak and pressure build up. Without the coolant moving and the engine heat after shut down saturated the coolant in the engine to the boiling point and built pressure, releasing the pressure cap and allowing coolant out on the ground. A recovery tank of any kind would solve this and the use of the proper cap would allow the coolant to return to the radiator after cool down. The recovery hose has to go to the bottom of the tank so that the end is in the bottom of the recovery tank and able to syphone teh coolant.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

Autozone sells kits in 2 sizes, they are 8 or 9 dollars each.. however, they will not hold most of the coolant, only a couple quarts max. It couldn't hurt to add one but there could be other reasons for so much coolant coming out (bad cap?)..

Another thing or 2 - Don't over fill the system, the coolant should just come up to the baffle plate below the filler neck or about 3/4 inch down.
Another is liquid on the floor looks a lot more than it is.

I checked the fluid level prior to the drive because I was pretty worried about overheating and I wanted to make sure the level was correct.

Did any of the year models after '68 come with a recovery system that I could retrofit?

I found an aluminum catch can on YearOne but it's pretty spendy. They also had a white plastic system that was around $30 but I'm not sure how it would look in the engine compartment.

68 fury came with a round one. Bolted up on the passenger side next to the rad.
Works in my 65 coronet.

I tossed a simple white Jazz catch can in mine, not a recovery system though. There are some really neat aluminum ones on the market, I remember someone made a 5-sided one that was awesome - they can cost though. Every car should have some sort of catch system minimally.

Really? Looked like it belonged to me. The bracket and everything looked correct.
Even yellowed like the washer bottle.
Ah well. It works.
