Moparts,

I have searched on this issue on google and wanted to get your take. Two weeks ago my wife is driving down the road and then hears a clunk and then the car would not shift out of 2nd all the way home. The car also began to run warm. Today it happened again a clunk and then the car would not shift out of 2nd again. Last time I put a tester on the computer and cleared the code and it worked fine. (PO441)

Since then Ive been geting a P0700 code and a PO871 with hard down shifts into 2nd while breaking or decelerating it wants to stay in 2nd until it is turned off.

It seems to be some type of sensor that is the issue from my research.

PO871 - Overdrive Hydraulic Pressure Switch Circuit

Hoping someone here would have some additional insight for me on this error. It seems from the error that some have replace the valvebody on the transmission and this has solved the problem. Others it was the output speed sensor on the tranny or the battery or alternator. Others says loose wiring, any advice would be amazing!

Craig

The p0700 is the valve body. I replaced it, fairly easy, better with a lift. There is a consensus on dodgeintrepid.net that you can take the orifice pack apart, clean it, and put it back exactly the way it was taken apart and it will work. I just replaced it, $400 for the part and a weekend on my back. The connectors are tricky. As a side note, use the MOPAR fluid, and nothing else. I put the wallyworld fluid in to top off and have some torque converter chatter. 5k more miles and I'll put all new mopar fluid in. If you or your friend has a code resetter give that a try. Are you over 100,000? If not try the warranty route.

So replacing the valvebody fixed your problem? That is good news. I will make sure to use the mopar transmission fluid. I was planning on getting the part at the junkyard over the weekend. Is this a part I should only buy new? Does this tend to fail on cars over 100,000 miles?

From the service manual. Hope this clears it up for ya.

The Solenoid/Pressure Switch Assembly (Valve Body Assembly) is inside the transaxle and mounted to the valve body assembly. The assembly consists of four solenoids that control hydraulic pressure to the L/R, 2/4, OD, and UD friction elements (transaxle clutches), and the torque converter clutch. The reverse clutch is controlled by line pressure from the manual valve in the valve body. The solenoids are contained within the Solenoid/Pressure Switch Assembly, and can only be serviced by replacing the assembly.

The solenoid assembly also contains pressure switches that monitor and send hydraulic circuit information to the PCM. Likewise, the pressure switches can only be service by replacing the assembly.

Just called the local dealership (parts dept.) and was told they usually sell the solenoid pack $278.30 or the inhibitor switch $45.00 for this problem not the valvebody.

For whatever that is worth!

Put a NEW solenoid pack on it and it fixes 90% of them.

must drop the valve body to do it

Interresting thread and timely at that. I have a 2002 300M Special that started acting very similar to your intrepid. It'd been getting slightly rougher at the 2-3 shfit cold and very rarely a rough down shift when coasting to a stop. Then out of the blue I get a Check engine light in the middle of a 20 minute highway drive. I get close to home and it kicks into 2nd gear limp mode as a slow down enough for a corner. Got home and it gives me the P0700 code and nothing more. It didn't bother again for a week of normal 30 min low speed city driving, then after a fresh trans fluid change at my favorite dealership (it was due) it stated kicking into limp mode every time I make a longer trip (20+ minutes highway speeds). I'm going to have the dealdership pull the tranny codes for me and make an assessment. I'll check here to see how your problem turns out and I'll let you know what mine turned out to be when I get those codes pulled.

Code pulled on mine:
P0841 - LR Pressure switch sensor circuit
P0731 - Gear ratio error in 1st
P1790 - Fault after a shift
P1776 - Solenoid switch valve stuck in LR

Odd things it's it's only ever the 2-3 shift that has ever felt harsh. Tranny shop replace the solenoid assembly and cleaned the valve body. Car has been fine today and I did a fair bit of driving so it does seem to be the solenoids that were the likely culprit.

Hope that helps.

Greg
